Sunroof and roof lining rattles on cars with sun roofs is a known issue for Honda. Two problems: The roof lining itself has a reinforcing strip that surrounds the aperture for blind, fixed to the lining with glue. The glue wasn't very good and let go allowing the whole lot to vibrate noisily. The fix is a replacement updated rooflining, i.e. one with modified glue! As for the glass sunroof seal, the solution is a thorough clean and treatment with silicon grease. The creaking which is hugely irritating, is caused by stiction between the seal and the body paint.
Where have you gained this knowledge, or is it your opinion? When you say known issue, as in it's just a Honda thing we're expected to live with, or known issue with possible fixes?

The hugely irritating creaking is by design then from what you're saying with no solution, or none yet?

Right I've got my Civic back and once again I can confirm the sunroof is not rattling at present.

I have opened it and had a look at the new seals that have been installed, I cannot tell which seals have been replaced, but there's a lot of grease been applied all over the place around the surround of the sun roof.

I wish I could be more hopeful that this is the last time, and that the problem is fixed once and for all. Fingers crossed!

Have just received my car back after leaving it with the dealer to investigate 2 different sunroof rattles. One, a buzzing type rattle right above my head - usually only on poorer grade tarmac, the other is a proper 'something is loose' rattle which occurs over rough road etc when the roof is open fully. The result of their 3 days investigating is that they can identify 'numerous' rattles from my sunroof and want it back for a whole week to take the roof lining out and possible the whole sunroof. Fingers cross this will not be an ongoing saga.

Also having teh modified grill for teh parkign sensor issue fitted when its back with them.

bonus of the My Honda app is that I cna see they did take it out on a reasonable test drive on 2 separate occasions :grin2:

The buzzing above your head I'm sure is a cable run which sits on the headliner and vibrates. I fixed mine using a 2 inch square piece of furniture foam as the main dealer just didn’t acknowledge it. The head liner comes off easily to be able to do this, but as your dealer has acknowledged, let them do it!

My rattle and the more general '10G Honda Civic Roof Rattle' mentioned on various forums I think only happens when the roof is closed so yours would be something different perhaps.

Hopefully it is not an ongoing saga, as it with many of us.

Hi,

I am just wondering if any of the affected cars are sedans? By looking at your car details most are hatchback and rest I cannot be sure.

Thanks

I had a rattle that wasn't picked up by the previous owner (the service manager!), a suttle ticking noise just above your head, after I pointed it out to the numpty he agreed and it was replaced. HOWEVER now it's summer I had the roof open and on going round a left hand bend there was a crack and now it needs reaplcing again.

I won't be buying a 4 th honda

What needs replacing exactly? The sunroof? The Roof Liner? The sun roof blind?

I'm with you on the 'not buying another Honda' sentiment...

I'm hoping a screw has sheared on the sunroof pull back mechanism and that the garage can investigate and replace it without the need for another new sunroof, or roof liner. Either way it's got to in for them to remove the liner and take a look, I'm losing count how many visits I've had to the dealer with this car to the extent I kicked off the other day and they are looking for a "swap" to another of the same spec...

It won't be easy choosing a different brand but with Honda pulling out of the UK theres even less incentive to buy one

I think the biggest problem with the 10G is the fact that it's even needed to go in to the dealer for such fundamental issues. To build a car, and release it customers with pretty consistent quality shortfalls quickly damages reputation.

For me to consider a Honda in the future, I don't think I would trust test driving the actual car I was going to buy, as with mine - it was a dream to test drive, but months down the road the amount of niggles, I have lost count of and worse still: some I just have to live with. Then there's the whole hassle of going to the dealer for days on end, courtesy cars (never equal to my 1.5 CVT Prestige), partially fixing the issues, not fixing the issues, fixing issues for a short time. EXHAUSTING!

Before this car ALL my Honda's have required is basic maintenance and servicing for 10's of thousands of miles of ownership. This car has done 9K and has spent nearly a month out of 7 months OUT of my hands! Just unacceptable, and unforgivable. I have a drafted letter ready to finish and send to Honda, but I'm in two minds whether to bother sending it as I feel such a disservice by Honda in their product.

I don't want money off, I don't want an apology or acknowledgement, I just want, seemingly the impossible - for this car to match the expectations set by Honda in the past. A letter sent to Honda will not give me this.

If Honda did a 6 month 'no quibble returns policy' I would definitely try a Honda in the future, but they won't do this, so alas I am pushed toward Kia and Hyundai.

I feel your pain bud, I thought (wrongly) that being the service managers car that he had driven extensively for 6 months that most of this would have been picked up. And that was probably why he was so accomodating and helpful when I made my initial gripes admitting he would just turn the radio on and drive (blindly it would seem) for 50 miles each way a day!

Alas we could gripe all day, so pull a pint sit back, slurp some down and carry on.:grin2:

My sunroof rattle is BACK! So not fixed - just 'bodged'.

Clearly the absurd amount of grease applied some months ago now did stop this noise, though every time I opened the sunroof with the blind open, strings of grease rained down upon me.

I have decided - Give me the strings of grease, and stop the damn noise - WITHOUT leaving my car with the Honda dealership for several days again. There was talk on this post to use silicone grease , what is the best/safest kind to use, will it drip/stain my seats? Isn't this basically WD40? - the grease Honda used doesn't appear to mark or stain at all.

Whatever grease Honda applied on my 3rd visit for this issue, it was all over the place in that area!

Nothing worse than itch you can’t scratch.
Whatever you decide to use apply in one area / location at a time then wait to see if rattle gone. Hopefully you’ll eventually find the location with the issue and be able to target direct.
I use silicon spray on my windows where they contact my wind deflectors. But it does run. Not sure about staining as I clean up straight away.
You can get a white spray grease that doesn’t run just sticks but not sure if any use in this situation/area.
Best of luck.

No fix as of yet?

Hi Guys,
Talking to a local dealer here (issue: noise when sunroof closed kind of metallic tick whenever there is the slightest bump on the road).
I could figure out that it gets worse in warmer weather (Hungary, warm summers). Gets better now in the fall, will see the winter.

The dealer said it is caused by the different metals they used (alu vs steel). Which shrink/extend differently and making a gap.

They said they can try, but there is no fix from Honda so far :(

Pretty annoying.

It's pretty annoying to say the least. I don't think I 'dare' own a car with a sun roof EVER again after this experience, christ how many engineers and committees put these machines together and they just fail to foresee such issues?! Honda alone must have hundreds of years of experience combined.

Applying 'grease', a lot of it, definitely stops the noise for a few months in my case - but that's not a fix in my book - and I'm not overly happy about opening the roof to have grease drip down.

Conundrum - drippy grease, silent sunroof during motion OR rattly sunroof (when closed)!

Simples. Plenty of grease, keep the roof closed and keep the climate control on. Three advantages: no rattles, no grease drips and the sun beating down on your head can give you skin cancer.

Wise words, with a dark twist at the end of your advices!

What if the sun isn't shining, but it's mild and dry, and you just want a slight 'convertible feel' to your driving experience? Grease-rain should not be compulsory in this instance!

Then get a convertible, not a hot hatch with a sunroof that rattles, and then have the sun beating down on your head lots.:grin2: (and rain):surprise:

I've used some 'WD-40 Specialist Silicone Spray' around the rear and side edges of the roof and the rattle has gone. £6.99 - easy to apply - MOST of the year my sunroof is closed, it's a compromise, which on an 18month old £30K car I shouldn't have to - but there we are.

I feel pursuing Honda's line of 'fix attempts' I'm just going to be wasting my time. The design is fundamentally flawed, they won't ever admit this, nor in my opinion actually ever be in a position to solve it once and for all.
