Hi people,

Looking at buying an fn2 with 128k miles, this would be my 2nd. The owner says there is a rattle that sometimes happens when the car is started, this then goes after about 15-20 seconds, it doesn't always happen though. The car seems in good overall condition, full history, no loss of power and pulls hard, no engine management light on, any ideas what it could be? He thinks it may be the timing chain, from what I've researched it could be this or maybe valve clearances? im only after a cheap type r really as ive been offered this one for 3500 which i thought was a good deal

Also to add the car went in to the garage today for a faulty knock sensor and the diagnostics machine brought up no other codes

Could be the wrong oil? Could be lots of things... some quite serious!

Walk away, unless it's really cheap.

About £90-100 through Honda (recommended to use them). It is possible to do it yourself using feeler gauges, but it's a bit involved.

I doubt it's valve clearances though - I don't think it would get less rattly when hot. More likely timing chain tensioners or a stretched chain, in my opinion.

To be honest I wouldn't bother - look at other cars. Timing chain issues can commonly be caused by the oil having dropped to a very low level in the past, which may have caused other problems too. Additionally whilst the timing chain kits are relatively cheap, the labour cost to fit them will be very expensive. You're probably looking at just shy of £1k all-in.

For the same money (including the cost of the timing chain and valve clearances), you can get a well sorted sub-80k miler.

Heat shields on the exhaust? Once warm they don't touch?

is the noise coming from the engine, i.e. open the bonnet and start the car?

yeah thats a good point, maybe ill keep looking, this one just looked nice with the GP kit and had sat nav, theres a few Cat D ones around with pretty low mileage for around 4k, this might be a better option.

THe noise seems to be coming from the actual engine, he said its been like it for a while, basically it sometimes happens on start up and sometimes doesnt, then after about 15 seconds or so the noise goes

Grinspeed in leyland do the chain for £590 fitted.

Depends on the history if theres alot with it might be worth investing a little extra on this while its cheap.

mine rattles occasionally from cold, but only for a split second, been told it could be the chain tensioner? but it's hard to check without replacing and it only happens on a cold start

any strange rattles would have put me off, it could be a bit of chain rattle that not unheard of. but its not worth the potential headache if its the start of something worse.
