Tom Tom one, its the best because

1. Cheap (cheaper than most)
2. Simple (all the functionalities that one would ever need)
3. Compact size (does not obscure the windscreen)

There are many other makes but TomTom are the best. There are more expensive TomTom models (£400 max) and have a lot of other functions but not really worth it.
However, just one slight problem, it only comes with UK maps and you would need to buy/upgrade other area maps......

I bought a Sony nav-u U93T last December as a present from wife, top of Sony range I think, 4.8" wide display, Bluetooth, European mapping pre-installed. Only used 4/5 times, then in July I bought a Civic EX with satnav, so may be selling if you are interested. `As new` condition, also bought a mains charger for it and carry case. A couple on ebay at the moment if you look, one is Buy it Now for £150, the other at about £78 with four days to go.
Get back if you might be interested and I will look at a price.

Do you have a "Smartphone" - HTC \ iThing \ etc. ? ...

If so, you can install Satnav software such as 'CoPilot' on it and mount the 'phone in the car ...

Since I'm paranoid (must have backup !), I've got 'CoPilot Live 8' on my HTC Hero, as well as the Honda built-in SatNav ...

CoPilot is very good indeed - OK - doesn't have the same \ full functionality as a dedicated SatNav unit, but it performs extremely well indeed ! ...

It really depends on your requirements, if you don't want/need bluetooth or mp3 playback through the satnav or live traffic updates then look at the more basic ranges. If you are going to use it a lot then the live traffic updates may be worth it but there is an ongoing cost of £7.99 per month for this. I have a Tomtom 540 which I got through this forum at a good price but don't use much of the features to be honest, if I was looking for one at the moment I would look at the Tomtom XXL which has a nice big 5" screen so should be nice and clear to use although obviously larger if portability is important to you. Go to Halfords for a look, they have most of the popular models on display.

I've had a tomtom ONE XL for two years now, can't fault it. Its just a one series but bigger screen...battery life is pretty dire but I use it plugged in so doesn't bother me.

My friend who works in Halfords highly recommends Garman systems, says they are much more accurate and quicker boot-up times than tomtom etc. And more features for your money

Hang on while I turn my monitor through 90° :D
I was cornering sharply at the time ! ...

(I tried rotating the image 90 degrees, but the ".jpg" resolution was poor) ...

p.s. - 'CoPilot' can be had for free, if you know where to look ..

I have a tom tom 530 which has all the toys. If you want a simple but effective but go for the tom tom one and if you need a bigger screen go for the XL.

thanks for relies i will be looking into over the coming weeks.... ah xmas shopping dont ya just hate it!

the recipient has an ihpone so the copilot is an option but an iphone app is not as big to wrap up as a dedicated sat nav so wont look as impressive under the tree.
