Hi All,

I was wondering how big is the tank of the 9th gen civic. All the manuals and specs says 50l, which should be the same amount as the 8gen, however when on my old 8gen I was easily putting 48-49l without driving on fumes (according to the fuel gauge at least), and now with my new tourer The total is 40-41 l around the 0miles left mark!

Is it normal and what’s your experience with that? The car is a tourer 1.6 i-dtec.

I've dabbled in the fuel tank lottery before; I've not lost yet. 48.x litre fill which was about 30 miles extra after 0miles remain. Assuming all things equal, that probably equates to about 60miles on a dtec.

i tend to just fill when the light comes on. nice to know i wont come to a grinding halt the minute it ticks over to 0miles and i can get to an emergency if i am running low

Haven't tried it yet in the 9G but when I had the 2.2 8G my rule of thumb was once the yellow light comes on you've 50 mile left and it never once beat me. There are those who are going to comment that doing this drags crud through the system and that you'll end up with water through condensation on the inside of your fuel tank but I did this practice for 150K miles and never even changed the fuel filter on it and Engine wise, was running as sweet as a nut when I traded in. Rest of the car not so much as AC, Inlet Manifold and Clutch were all goosed but I'd say 150K on original clutch was a good innings.

Haven't tried it on the 9G as I've heard that it goes into limp mode once you get down to Zero? don't know if that is true though.

Thanks for this update, I've done it with my old Derv (2.2 8gen) - not sure how much more but let's say 20-30 miles, and I've put 48 after that in it.

On this new one, I haven't gone over the 0 miles mark, but I've been close and the difference between the stated 50l and the 41 L I usually put in it, filled to the brim is ridiculous.

Well I'm only beaten by this by my other car - Jazz 09, which says 0 and you can put around 32l from 45l tank ..., but I've tested there and and I'm happily driving around town for 70-80 more miles after 0 and put 38l after that, once I went over 100 miles but on any incline it was starting to jitters then I've refilled 42.3L and that was it, but even if that's the limit it's much closer to the stated 45L than the "normal" 32L which is what an average Joe is going to fill in, if the light and miles left is followed ... that's like 1/3 of the tank gone .. for nothing, considering that the MPG is not too crazy on the jazz you have a CTR like cycle between the refills ... ~250 miles per tank ...

I never fill my tank to the brim unless I'm going a journey that'll use it. Don't see the point in carrying that extra weight about... I put about £25 on a Monday and that covers my weekly 300 miles of commuting and some running about the doors at night. Compared to the 2.2 8G I had, I was about £40+ for the week doing the same mileage.

I can't do it any other way - 500miles are only to and from work per week and then when we put the weekend journeys sometimes 1 tank is not enough - hence the thread ...

I'm not complaining though, with the 8gen 2.2 only the commuting miles were draining the tank (46-47L), now the same distance is covered with 36-37L (considering that the weather is still cold and this number will go down with the temp going up) ..

A week ago driving home km-s to empty showed 0. from that point I did around 30km-s, but was starting to get scared, and pulled of to a gas station. 30km certified from 0, but I think it can do 50.

Is that on a 9th Gen?
Which engine?
Did you get the turtle sign on the dashboard and going into limp mode?

I'd be interested to know this too... Apparently I'm sure I've read on here at 0 it goes to limp mode and haven't tested it to see if true. Mine is the 1.6 Derv.

I think Car Throttle bought an old Accord and ran it on the warning light to see how far they could get. I think they got something close to an additional 90 miles out of the car on the warning light so rest assured, you'll have plenty of fuel spare!

True, I've watched it as well, but that was an old accord, here the question is for 9gen Civic.

Only Euro 6 1.6D (without fuel primer in passenger footwell) have tortoise mode - reduced revs at zero miles through to forced engine stop following further driving.

Mine is the 2015 facelift but is Euro5 and has the primer in the footwell so you're saying it doesn't go into Limp Mode at zero?

Correct, no tortoise mode on Euro 5 with fuel primer. It can runout of fuel and be recovered by adding fuel and priming.

Euro 6 - No fuel primer -tortoise mode will bring engine to a forced stop following reduced throttle after 0 miles and following addition of about 7 to 10 litres of fuel engine can be restarted without any need to prime.

i got interested in the weight of fuel as i know a few people here use weight as the reason for half fill; petrol (according to wiki) is around 0.75kg/litre. so 20l is 15kg.
diesel is 0.832kg/litre (wiki).

less weight than i thought tbh.

I don't think weight makes that much difference over a short period of time but I reckon that over a year if you're carrying excess it will have a cost associated.
Strange how Diesel weighs more than petrol as they are both liquid but if you look at your V5 if you have a Diesel the fuel type is described as Heavy Oil.

9 gen civic 1.8 petrol. No turtle sign, just the fuel low indicator comes up as soon as I reach I think 50km to empty. No affect on power, just drives normally. After reaching 0 km to empty I still did around 30 km-s.

The only time I drove until fuel light came on I managed to put 42.17 litres in to first click. So still 1.5 gallons left = 100 miles. And I was getting nervous.
