Smoking/ steaming brakes!!!!

4408 Views 11 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Warwick1984
So I recently upgraded to Tarox corsa 114 front pads and new grooved discs. Just given it some welly for the first time after installing to try them out having left them about 100 miles or so to bed in and when I got out the car I noticed steaming. It's coming from the brakes. Any ideas what this could be or whether they will stop doing this after a while?

Are they rubbing?

How hot were your wheels?
You may just be bedding them in?! My yellowstuff pads can stink when I punish them when they are new
seezed calipers? try taking them apart and gresing all the moving parts.

Def not seized they are free and moving and were well greased when I put them back together. They don't smell as such. Not been funny but could there really have been much I could have done wrong when changing the pads discs for this to happen?
Quick after thought. It seems to be mainly one side and I have a feelIng the side I didn't clean the disc as thorough before putting on. Is it possie it's the Killy residue burning off still? Even after 100 + miles??
if its the first time they have received heat/abuse im sure its possible.

New brakes usually do stink, especially DS2500s where you have to abuse them from the off to bed them in v quickly.

Did you follow the correct procedure for the chosen pad

It's not that they smell. It smoke/steam it's possible it's the disc steaming. I didn't know that there was a differen procedure for different pads. I just changed them as I normally would. Is that what you meant? I think I might go for another spin in the morning on way to work heat them up again and see what happens.
did you clean the disc down with brake cleaner before you fitted.

Some pads you take easy for say 100miles and slowly build up speed/ pressure to bed them in, others like the ds2500s you bed in hard, multiple hard stops until they fade and smoke, let them cool and thats them sorted,

It's best to read the manufacturers data for each pad,

give them time mate, they should be ok

I see what you mean. Have just been taking it east to bed them is as if they were oem. I cleaned one side more that the other and they side I did t clean so well seems to be the one smoking. I'm sure it will be fine just need some re assurance / confirmation from others who may have experienced this
Many new brake discs have a thin film of oil/lubricant on the surface to prevent them from rusting, and keep them nice and pretty before you put them on the car.

Most likely you didn't remove all of it when washing them... no biggie.

That's what I think almost like a bit of burning oil of an engine if there was a spillage I suppose if the was to describe what I'm getting. Can't see it been much other that the discs pads bedding in - but thought best to check with those in the know
