I've had my 10G 1.0 EX Tech Pack six weeks and about three weeks ago a loud squeal started coming from the brakes at low speed just before coming to a standstill. Contacted Honda today and they told me it was something to do with the metal used in the pads and they are changing them when anyone reports it. They've done two this week and they're doing mine tomorrow. Anyone else come across this?

Just picked my car up from dealer. Turns out they are not replacing the pads and are just having cars in for checking. The pads they supply now contain more metal under EU regulations which does cause squeaking and they say there is nothing they can do about it.

I would not worry about it too much as it only does it when my pads are cold, and at less than 10 kph. When they get a bit of heat in them they fine.

be glad you dont have the 9/10gen typeR's. the brembo's are always doing it but it's normal behavior.

that type of squeal is not an actual problem with the brakes (ie: quite safe to drive with long term) and just an irritation with the noise.
Solution for us typeR guys is to brake harder; so drive for what the car was built for ;)
I'm surprised they allowed it through QC for the 1.0/1.5 civics though. At least they're replacing under warranty.

1600 miles on the clock now and I reckon it started around 1000. I drove 12 miles to the dealer today and it only started just before I got there so not just when cold.
As i said they had two others in for the same reason this week but just for checking, no replacing. I'm wondering if it's just some variants of the Civic and whether it's across other manufacturers if they're governed by EU regs as I was told by Honda today.

Looks like they're designed for more severe braking which is OK when solo and you're behind the wheel but a bit different when you've got passengers to consider. Honda did say it might improve so I'll have to see how it goes.

I do notice there's nearly a total lack of dust, certainly in comparison with what I was used to with my old 8G.

That's funny I get a lot of dust on the spokes of my alloys, as much if not more than my 8G 2.2 ctdi.

'Almost none' is an exaggeration, and cleaning the wheels daily will help as well, but a noticeable drop from the 8G dust.
There is some and if I left it a couple of weeks it may probably be a fair amount, but I still reckon it's much less than good old 8G.

I would expect to see almost none too if I cleaned my wheels daily. To me that is extreme.....although I do clean my exhaust tips daily, inside and out. :grin2:
I clean my wheels weekly, and brake dust is more or less the same as what it was with my Focus ST.
I have heard my brakes squeaking, but it happens very rarely.

I get the squealing break sound regularly, but never when I'm actually breaking, only when I'm just driving along. It has started doing it in the last month or so.

Mine is doing the same, did about 400 miles on the clock with no issue, since then, now at 850 on the clock, the brakes squeal at low speed.

Got it booked into my dealers this Friday.

All he said they'll do is rough the pads up and re grease them.

Hopefully it fixes it, but its all under warranty anyway.

Back from my dealers.

Its normal.

They investigated the problem, took it for a spin and what not, upon getting my keys back they showed me an email that Honda have sent out to dealers, in regards to the squeaking brakes, as its a known issue which they have investigated.

Its pretty much along the lines of,

Due to new regulations, certain materials cannot be used in brake pads anymore, to brake pads are now harder than before, meaning the pads and discs will wear at the same rate.

Honda, have substituted these harder materials, for softer materials that are allowed to be used, so that the brake discs will last longer than the pads, in turn, these new materials can and will squeak, and its normal/acceptable for them to do so.

Ive been doing a bit of to and fro with Honda via email about their brakes.

I have a couple of emails stating everything and what not from Honda, however...

If you have squeaking brakes, call your dealer and insist on a 'Brake Clean' under warranty.

Honda have emailed me saying this it will be done under warranty, for myself, for the brake squeal

Asked local dealer this week if there are any developments and was told that Honda are remaking the pads and there will be a recall soon.

This is good news (as long as its true and theyre not trying to fob us off) I had my pads and discs changed about 700 miles ago on the clock, the squeaking is starting to return.

I would be amazed if it is a "recall".
It does not affect all Civics and is not a safety issue, so it's more likely pads will be changed as and when customers complain.....or done routinely at servicing.
