Hi all,

Looking at the forum posts on the infamous squeaky clutch, there seems to be a lot of information on possible solutions but nothing concrete as people are often coming back with how the ‘fix’ did not last and they have had X amount of replacement clutch cylinders. Please note I am only referring to the squeaky clutch and not the clutch ‘click’.

I will hopefully be taking my civic to a garage soon to get it fixed but I would love to know what works and what doesn’t work.

On the forums I have found the following;

1) Misaligned rod that enters the master cylinder, which scrapes on the inside of the master cylinder. Can be fixed by adjusting the clutch pedal to correct the alignment.

2) Replacing the master/slave cylinder. This seems to be the most common fix although quite often the squeak comes back after a few weeks.

3) Lubricating the O-ring in the master/slave cylinder with silicone grease.
This seems to be only a temporary fix.

4) Plastic Grommet is cracked/missing. This can cause noise but probably is not the main reason for the clutch squeak.

It seems from these 4 solutions that the first is the most likely culprit. Has anybody here gone to a garage and has asked for the clutch pedal to be re-aligned? If so did it work?

Many thanks to those who I took the info from, especially for finding out about the alignment problem from the US forums!

Cheers,

William

Seeing this thread has reminded me about my clutch squeak. Mine has squeaked for months, but it has somehow stopped.. I must have a self healing Civic or there's something to do with the heat inside the cabin and its drying or not drying it out the rod/seals/cylinder as much. Either way, unless the master cylinder is leaking brake fluid or is failing I won't be paying Honda the £'s to get it replaced.

If it squeaks...turn the radio up! :D

Cheers

Hey. Yes my Civic has this same problem... The garage has lubed it up before christmas, which was a temporary fix.. it now squeaks again!

I will be taking it to a Honda garage this week (my warranty runs out in Feb).. One question I have is - If they carry out some repair (whatever that is) , then it starts squeaking again in a couple of months (my warranty will have expired) can I still claim under warranty as the problem dates before warranty expiry?

Theres no way I want them lubing it again then for me to return next month and them to say gimme $$$.

Thats right steve, I don't want to be fobbed off with temporary fix with them cashing in. Especially as I do not have warranty.

Anyways, if anybody who has had a sucessful fix could post here, that would be very helpful.:)

My Clutch pedal sqeeled like a piggy going to slaughter. I used all weather lubricant to stop it making the noise of doom. Its never done it since.
The all weather lubricant is what I use on my Downhill Mountain bike. You can get it in evans cycles.lol Worked for me.

Where did you put the lubricant ivtecdoyou? I had put in some Wd40 around the spring area that did not have any effect. Also I have heard that lubing it up is only a tempory fix.

I had the Clutch Pedal Box assembly replaced to fix the creaking noise. It did work for about 4 months.

Car going in for service and having them look again at the clutch squeak, its still under Honda warranty (glad I took it out). Let you know how it goes.....

William - My Honda was at the dealers today for the squeaking clutch.

They replaced the clutch pedal box assembly (apparantly the problem was due to washers or something brushing etc).

It now feels great and not a squeak to be heard.

I can't comment on how much it cost as it was done under warranty but it took them just over an hour.

Clutch Pedal Box not the answer, so car going in for a Clutch Master Cylinder replacement next week. The Pedal Box repair was over £200, just happy I took the Honda Happiness Warranty, and just renewed it for another year. £250 for peace of mind and full AA cover can`t bad.

Ok just back from the Honda garage (Maidenhead Littlewick-green)

They said that I need a new pedal box, I don't think I quite believe them as there was a lot of mutterings with the mechanic and the guy on the desk... HMMMMM

Anyways they said fitting a new pedal box would cost including labour £260

It is unlikely that my good for nothing warranty with auto-protect will cover it, so I may have to live with the squeak...grumble grumble

Why wouldnt your warranty cover it? Surely any warranty covers against failures of components?

It is an after market warranty as my car was bought second hand.
Looking through the booklet, there is a surprisingly long list of parts that they do not cover. Plus it says that there are more exclusions but these are not printed.

Well I shall find out tomorrow!

Honda Happiness covers the Pedal Box, have already had that replaced and now going for Clutch Master Cylinder, all covered by warranty nothing to pay.

Sorry William, just noticed your comment on it not being a Honda warranty. I would imagine it will still be covered by your warranty as it is a failed component.

I just did a wd40 mace effect.
You will see spindles crossin between two plates.
Just squirt the whole lot between these plates especially where the spindles brake through...work the clutch and spray some more.
Two minutes later I as choking to death but no more squeaks.
Thats at least 6 months ago.
Car stinks for two days with wd40 fumes though and you'll need a cloth on the carpet to soak up the drips.
