Hi most times when starting the car i hear a bad loud'ish grinding sound for 1 to 3 seconds. Car runs fine, just this sound. Some times it doesnt make it, other times it does. I've done over 210k km, so the car isn't new anymore.

Any ideas? Starter motor? PCV?

Any suggestions on what to check/do?

Cheers

Could this be the infamous k20 'sneeze'?

Something to do with the starter motor failing to disengage quickly enough. If so, one of my EP3s did this forever and it caused no harm at all.

Haven't heard of it being so common with 8th gen Hondas though.

I did the squeeze test on the PCV pipe and no real difference, so i guess it is not that.

Where abouts is the starter motor?

Might be the 50 degree VTC Actuator? 14310-RBC-003?? Seem like something that accords euros have issues with, same kinda sound and from the same general direction (left side of engine)

What do you all think? What can i check?

It won't be the PCV. Your description makes me think it's the starter motor failing to disengage perfectly, usually completely harmless and a trait of the car.

If it is the known issue of the "k20 sneeze", then as above it's not really a problem. Some people have gone to great lengths to cure it and it's still happened... I haven't seen one example of it causing any damage and seems far more common on the EP3 than any other, though also found in s2000's, DC5's. I remember a post on a different forum (more EP3 based) where someone was able to lube the starter motor appropriately and it helped - temporarily.

Could you take a video of the exact sound you're hearing?

I'm sure the forum would be able to pin point the issue if so.

Video? Good idea!! 13s of stock engine bay goodness 😀

Ideas? As you can hear once the sound goes away it’s totally fine. Also if the car is running and I turn it off and on the sound doesn’t happen.

The noise sometimes goes for long and is sometimes louder. But has never goes longer than 5s.

cheers

maybe i am doing the squeeze test wrong?

I just pinch the pipe and wait for a noise to change. How much do i pinch, what kind of noise change should i look for? I know that part has never been changed before. (as with most of the engine)

you just squeeze until you cut the flow. It's not a sound change, it's more of a sound or no sound.

So no one else has had this issue before?

Looking at what saif.mansour did I have basically already done that other than my PCV which passes the squeeze test.

What else can i try?

Have you checked your chain for slack?

I know its not the same but my old corsa 1.0 used to make the same noise on start up. Turned out the chain had stretched and the tensioner was fooked.

Did you have your valve clearance done or checked?
I can't remember having the sound after doing my valve clearance done.
