On the way back from work in my FN2 and the TPMS came on so I pulled over and saw there was smoke coming from my front left brake. The wheel was hot as well and smelt of burning brakes. I took it easy for the last mile but had reduced braking. When I got home I checked the right wheel and that was warm too. My drive is a combination of dual carriageways and country lanes so the car does get driven a bit hard but I'm not heavy on the brakes as I lift off early and heal and toe downshift as much as I can as well as blip the throttle when downshifting before I hit the brakes as well so I'm quite sure it's not due to my driving. The car had new pads on it when I got it in October but they're only cheap drivetec ones which I had planned to replace anyway.

Going to jack the car up and check it shortly but does anyone have any ideas? Could it be the calipers sticking?

Am I ok to drive it still if I take it easy?

Sorry for all the questions but first time I've managed to cook brakes on a car like this.

I've had stuck calipers on my Lexus in the past but was nothing like this.

I had that on my 1.8 changed my pads and discs (needed doing anyway) and properly cleaned and regressed the slider pins using red rubber grease. Problem hasn't come back. Hope that helps

Yes, it'll be a sticking caliper (common problem with the FN2). I've just had one replaced which is the 3rd one I've needed doing since I've owned the car.

You can try and refurb it or get a reconditioned unit.

I wouldn't drive too far whilst it's like that.

3 main reasons for sticking/binding callipers
1 slide pins seized = clean up and lubricate
2 piston sticking =you can try to clean up and see if it stays free but sometimes requires rebuild or replaced
3 collapsed flexi brake line = new brake pipe often people don't realise some of these flexi/rubber brake lines have a liner which if it breaks down collapses and acts like a valve you press pedal and force fluid through to push piston out but when you release the pedal the collapsed section closes and holds the fluid in front of that section like a closed valve or tap

Thanks for the input everyone. I stripped it all down last night and cleaned it all up. Only did the passenger side but the bottom slider pin was a bit stiff and discovered that when the pads had been changed no copper grease had been used to lubricate the edges and back of the pads. Since freeing up the slider a bit and greasing the edges and backs of the pads things seem ok but I'm still going to keep an eye on it and will sort out the driver's side this weekend. The caliper itself seemed fine. The Piston was out approx 2-3mm so not exactly looking stuck. I pushed that back too anyway and did the usual pumping of brakes once all put back together.

Think some new discs and pads may have to go on the to do list though.

I would think about changing the pads if you cooked them enough to get smoke

I'm going to do it asap. It was the front left that was smoking but right was warm too. The brakes work and seems a lot better since I cleaned it up last night but the brakes haven't had a good bite from day one I think. I blame the cheap pads on there. I may do the discs too.

What discs and pads do you all recommend?

You'll be lucky to get away without having a warped disc if it was smoking. How does it feel under heavy'ish braking..... any judder?

I have Brembo coated OEM discs & pads all round sourced from Eurocarparts.
Coated prevents them rusting as quickly as plain ones, only marginally more expensive.
Fine for road use with a good dose of spirited driving.

I've not really driven it hard or braked heavily in past couple of days. Just been taking it easy to see how it is since I cleaned it up but the brakes and wheels have been cool. I'm going to give it a blast tomorrow so will see how it is. I'm going to get pads ordered this week though. Not sure about disks yet. If I feel they're warped at all then will change them too.

I've always been one for using adl blueprint parts so may go for those. Their pads are great. Have tried mtec discs on the Lexus but not too sure about them.

What's the bite like with the brembos? I like the idea of the coated discs and if I can then would go for coated but normally they seem to be quiet a bit more expensive than oem non coated.
