I have a civic 2.2 EX diesel, the other week i was running low on fuel, trip said i could do 28 miles... so i just put a tenner in until i could fill up somewhere cheaper and the trip didn't change?!? stayed at 28 miles when i filled up after that it was fine.

I put £30 in on sunday and it said i could do 190 miles..... should be a lot higher seeing as it was on 3/4 of a tank, it's now stating i can do 85 miles and it's just under half a tank after doing 140 miles.

Im wondering if it's a dodgy sensor?! or maybe just something to do with the trip because it's still going down every now and again.

any ideas would be great!

Sounds odd? I have noticed sometimes if you put a tiny amount in the fuel metre doesnt always change but then again I put £40 in on Sunday, first time I've ever filled the car right up as I wanted to add some Redex and it shot up too 505 miles.

Its based on average speed/mpg that you are doing. On a full tank (after driving on small roads) mine says 270miles range, but as soon as I hit the motorway it goes up to 390miles.

I've found there is also a delay of around 2-3mins from the time you fill up before the reading updates, especially when you refil small amounts like 10pounds

Cheers for the quick reply, only thing is i've done a bit of town driving but i've done 3 30 mile trips with cruise set at 70 and still no change, normally it varies and i take little notice but with such a large amount of fuel and such a small estimated amount of miles left, i was a bit concerned i will however see how it goes, maybe putting a little more fuel in will make it re-asses the amount left?!?

In an earlier thread, someone stated that the trip only resets the petrol if you put in more than 10 litres. Not sure if this true or not

I always put £10 or so in when I'm somewhere where fuel is too pricey or I'm not near a tesco (got to love those clubcard points!). My trip computer still says under 30 miles.

From several tests I have found that once the fuel low light comes on (i.e. less than 30 miles range - or thereabouts) the computer won't reset it until you put over around £15 in the tank. I haven't tested pound increments in between so can't be exact - but I never thought it was a fault.

Thanks a lot everyone, surely though because i put £30 in it should've given me more than 180 miles left, seeing as i had been driving "eco" (those lights are annoying but can't take my eyes of them....) and the gauge went to 3/4?

To be honest I wouldnt trust the readout too much when I filled up said 450 miles then after having driven about 30 miles went up too 550?

sounds normal to me, the trip computer uses data from the last miles to calculate your remaining miles so if you were driving it harder before fuelling up, it will use the consumption based on that driving style, and when driven more gentle aftewards, it will re adjust

My Auto will only do circa 400 miles on a full tank :(

i-shift would do 500

Still prefer the full auto though

My other car (skoda fabia) has a valve in the filler neck that you open to let the air out once the pump has clicked off and i can get another 2 gallons in it. 57 litres in a 45 litre tank. and then i can do 220 odd miles before the guage moves.

The trip on that also calculates based on avg mpg. And the civic seems to do te same
