Hello,

Just a quick question, does anybody know if it is possible to deactivate the front passenger airbags on a new shape type R (to allow a rear facing baby to seat to be put in the front)?

In my last car there was a key switch in the glovebox, and with my wifes fiesta we had a switch fitted by the dealer - I cannot see a decent answer in the civics manual.

No - no - no ...

Parents who put a child seat in the front passenger seat are simply being SELFISH (it's for their convenience, not the child's safety) !!! ... as others have pointed out, the rear seat is considerably safer (and rear centre is best of all) ...

I have been told that in a very violent collision the airbag may be activated even if it is "deactivated" with a switch. So the recommendation is to not use a rear facing child seat unless the airbag has been mechanically deactivated (completely removed or the pyrotechnic parts of it removed)

I couldnt agree more but the passengers airbag can be deactivated in all 2006 onwards Civic's.It can only be done by a dealer with their diagnostic equipment and involves re-programming the airbag system to deactivate that airbag only. There are some legal disclaimers and stuff that the dealer will ask you to sign but this is possible.

I'm sure it can be done I would still be worried about an accidental discharge as the gas generating propellant is similar to that used to power model rockets (something along the lines of Sodium Azide). There are also considerable health risks posed by young lungs breathing what effectively become a biocide when detonated. At least from what I've read.

Deactivating Airbags

I called the dealer today who said their policy was to refuse to deactivate any airbags because of the safety implications.

The more I think about it the more it makes sense, I just do not like the thought of not being able to see the little one when driving anywhere, I am always concerned about their breathing etc, and want to pull over every time I hear a cough or splutter...

Agreed ! ...

Just buy a second rear view mirror (they sell them in Halfords and Asda for like 2-5 quid) ....... and use that to see littl-un strappped in safely in the back.

Apart from the baby \ child itself being safest in the rear (centre), the very action of turning your head to the side to look at 'the bairn' is obviously more dangerous than simply looking in the second rear view mirror ! ...

I always used the second mirror (preferably mounted above the first) solution, for all of my 5 children ...

Apart from the fact that the type r has no centre seatbelts in the rear - I know your next remark will be that it is not the correct car for someone with children - an argument which I am begining to sympathise with.

A second rear view mirror will only allow me see the rear of a rear facing child seat that is in the back not the child itself? A rear facing child seat either side of centre in the back will not be visible at all using a rear view mirror becasue of the shape of the seats.

I appreciate a type r is not quite a people carrier, but it has ample boot space, is rated very highly in the over all safety stakes and has room for 2 child seats in the back. I am still a million miles away from selling the type r and buying a picasso.

Actually if you look at the links I posted you get two mirrors, one that allows you to see behind you, the other is designed to see into a rear facing childseat.

Sorry, just worked through all the links you sent - I did not realise there were double mirrors - definately an option.

The (our) overall theme, was that the front passenger seat - of any car whatsoever - is the most dangerous place for a child \ baby seat ...

The centre rear is the safest - so, for those with a CTR - consider having extra 'bairn' seat fixings installed in the middle of the rear seat ... I can't believe that this would invalidate the "4 people rule", which (as I understand it) is restricted to 'adults' ...

Irrespective - "front seat worst - back seat best" ! ...

Hmmmm, I think a baby seat can be fixed in the centre using the isofix fixings even on an R, as it is the same seat as a CTS just missing the belt (IIRC) so look for the metal squared rings between the base and the back section they are your anchorage points.

Or if your 'paranoid' (in a good way....) about you baby's breathing then get one of those baby monitors with the breathing/pulse alarm.
