Hello all. Thanks for letting me join this site!

I have had a 57 Red Type S diesel for around 2 months. It is Red, GT spec and has 18 inch wheels I have not seen elsewhere - very sexy.

Anyway, after learning how to not take chunks out of my wheels when parking I am looking at the performance of my car and how to extract the best from it.

The car has done 27 k so the engine should still be in good condition and although I'm not a race driver I seem to struggle to make it accelerate that quickly.

Does the power die off at certain revs and when should you change gear? I have been thinking I should have gone for the type R but couldn't seem to justify the fuel consumption and think I should be able to have fun in the S but my driving experience is limited (2 Renault clios with 75bhp...).

Also can these cars take the occasional abuse?

Would love to hear your replies and advice.

Oh and the squarely clutch pedal drives me bonkers hahaha

You know there is double the horses of your renault right ?
No error lights ?
Clutch not slipping its but off ?

Thanks for responses.

No I think the clutch is fine just the pedal squeaks when changing into first and second but seems to have got better with the colder weather.

Don't get me wrong the car feels quick ish but don't seem to get that 'tug' I have read about and at about 3500 revs the power dies off . Is this when you should change for peak performance?

In regard to the remap thing I have limited knowledge. Speaking to my old man (who is very old fashioned) he has said don't tamper with the engine. Is it safe?

My clock still hasn't been put back a hour either...hahahaha but that is something I can live with.

Squeaky clutch is master cylinder, hold the am/FM button to change clock i think, says clock on it. Look at rev lights, I'd say 3500 ish.

Also. I took it to Kwik Fit and they said it was just the pedal and not the clutch...
I tired to change gear at 3500 this morning on the way to work but when I'm looking at the rev counter I ain't looking at the road... Is that safe?

When I ain't using my iPhone for this site il upload some pictures of the car :)

As you get to know your car, you'll learn whereabouts 3500rpm is without keeping your eyes on the rev counter- rather keep your eyes on the road ;)

Get it remapped and you've got power all the way up to the red. Transforms the car massively. Shame Honda didn't sell the car with a stage 2 map as standard. They would have sold a lot more dev's.

Depends what you mean by "tug" really. You'll have a much more noticeable peak in the torque which you must notice quite easily. You've also got ~140bhp underneath you, albeit a heavier car, so you should notice that!

Not sure what the top speed is supposed to be but I have a private racetrack just like yours where I've been done not too dissimilar speeds and the car still pulls well.

Learning the gear change coming from a petrol engine takes a bit of getting used to, the rev lights next to the speedo will help and mean you don't have to take your eyes so far away from the road.

The engine will take a remap - which changes the way the engine operates to provide more power - but the clutch will suffer with the additional torque that's running through it. The 2.2 clutch is known to have problems with the amount of power it had from the factory.

I'd suggest not doing much for a while - drive the car and get used to it. Then once you're more familiar with how it delivers power and handles, you can start modding it to get what you want out of it.

That sounds like pretty sound advice. I would happily mod the engine but don't want to screw the car in the process. Think I need to find a plot of land to learn how to drive properly. Some reverse parking lessons wouldn't go a miss either

Thanks. I am cool about the sticker but thanks for offering :). I was having some fun in my car yesterday. Trouble is as soon as you have out your foot down to the floor you are at the speed limit!!!
I deliberated for ages over cars, researching all manner of hot hatches like corsa vxrs and Clio sport etc and then I bought a type S based on the 18 inch alloys... The car is pretty solid though and my mrs loves it too :)

Hi Ash and welcome aboard

If you are still learning the bounds of the car IMO it would be better in terms of mods to look at things such as brake pads discs and lines and possible a FRS before chipping your derv monster.

That way you get the better set up and the handling and more time to get used to the power before slamming a load more horses and torques under the bonnet.

As for the reversing, takes a little getting useful sometimes.
Depending on what you are looking to do inside the car, some after market head units come with the option of installing a rear view camera (My job for today!!), or alternatively you could fit some rear parking sensors.

Otherwise, there are some funny little things that stick out of the car that can help that too :popcorn:

Karlos, I couldn't park my Clio so there is no way with this! I just drive around until I find a place I can drive forward into. I have already got multiple chips out of the front alloys but I have learned to approach curbs with the wheel straight.

TBH I never even thought about brakes (not sure what FRS is?) just wanted it to get to 60 quicker. I have been driving quite briskly the last two days trying to work out when to change and couldn't work out why I felt sick when I arrived at the destination. My mrs reckons its motion sickness hahaha

If you jumped out of a 75hp car into a 140hp Civic and still find it a little sluggish, you're not driving it right! ;)
