Yes, if you dont you will get a rattle, I certainly did when I didnt put mine in.

Have to admit the Sachs that came off weren't totally shot
I found exactly the same, there was plenty of life left inside the rear shocks, plenty bump and rebound, yes the outside was rusty too but no leaks. I couldn’t recommend the Sachs based on this experience and always recommend Bilsteins now.

Everything off again tomorrow then. Won't take long though, done it today so no rusty bolts anywhere.

You wont even need to take the top mount off, you will get enough compression with the spring compressors and slip the rubber pad into place

Would that work with the whole thing on the car as well?

Edit: nevermind, of course not, I'd push my spring compressors through the bodywork!
