Would it be a good idea to start a wiki thread on the weights of the honda oem alloys and any tyres, callipers, discs and pad weights so that people can appreciate unsprung weight in order to modify their cars accordingly?

What are peoples views on this?

Yes exactly trust each other. We are doing this to benefit members, I wish I knew as much as I know before I started modifying my car.

I think the understanding of unsprung weight is fundamentally important so that you aware of the dynamics and what unsprung weight can do in a negative way.

Cool 2.2 standard caliper with carrier ex pad = 5kg
17" oem type s wheel with michelin sport tyre = 23kg
16" oem es alloy with bridgestone tyre =17.1 kg

Data base is brill idea we can get a moderator to update it as we weigh certain parts.

Hi all

I have been doing such research into the weights of the different components of three different models as shown below for info on unsprung weight. It will be good to look at these before you mod.

FN 2 Type R

EBC GD disc front

Code: GD1118 300mm dia x 25mm thick = 13.8kg

Yellow stuff pads front

DP41254R = 135H x 52W x 16TH (mm) = 1.6kg


EBC GD rear disc (same as FK3 2.2 diesel)

GD1368 260mm dia 9mm thick = 7.2kg

Yellow stuff pads rear

DP41902R = 95.7H x 46.5W x 15.5TH (mm) = 1.1 kg

Type R caliper including carrier and bolts = 4.5KG x 2 = 9KG

Therefore total weight = 32.7 ( Excluding wheels)

Type S 17" OEM wheels with tyres = 23 kg per corner
Type R 18" OEM wheels with tyres = ?????

FK3 2.2 Diesel

EBC GD disc front

Code: GD1367 282mm dia x 23mm thick = 13.4kg

Yellow stuff pads front

DP41901R = 131.7H x 56W x 17.8TH (mm) = 1.8kg


EBC GD rear disc (same as FK3 2.2 diesel)

GD1368 260mm dia 9mm thick = 7.2kg

Yellow stuff pads rear

DP419902R = 95.7H x 46.5W x 15.5TH (mm) = 1.1 kg

FK3 2.2 caliper including carrier and bolts = 5KG x 2 = 10KG

Therefore total = 33.5 excluding wheels.


Accord Type R

Code: GD1132 300mm dia x 28mm thick = 16.6kg

Yellow stuff pads front

DP4872R = 148H x 59W x 17TH (mm) = 2.3kg


EBC GD rear disc (same as FK3 2.2 diesel)

GD1368 260mm dia 9mm thick = 7.2kg (Will be same as type R and 2.2)

Yellow stuff pads rear

DP41902R = 95.7H x 46.5W x 15.5TH (mm) = 1.1 kg (Will be the same as type R and 2.2)

Type R caliper including carrier and bolts = 5.8kg x 2 = 11.6kg

Total = 38.8 kg

Therefore total so far is 38.8 without the calipers and carriers. This looks by far the heaviest setup. However due to the surface area of the pads and pistons the braking force is better and heat dissipation is better again as thicker disc compared to civic type r disc 25mm and far better by 4mm for the 2.2 disc and bigger dia by 18mm!


As you can all appreciate you can compare now with different alloy wheel weights to look at your unsprung weight.

N.B. 1kg unsprung = 10kg of weight!

Therefore when I had the OEM wheels on I had 23 x 4 + 38.8 =130.8kg

With new wheels = 18.5 x 4 + 38.8 = 112.8kg

If I had the ctr setup I would save another 6.1 kg of weight so 106.7 kg but I don't think it is worth going to ctr now due to cost! just to save 6.1kg, but on the other hand 6.1kg = 61kg unsprung weight!

What do people think?

Whoops made a mistake on 2.2 calipers - the piston is 54mm and not 57mm.
