The missus golf is driving us up the wall. Just when you think it's going to be ok it throws a spanner in the works.
We have a coolant problem. The car recently lost coolant and dipped below the minimum, topped it up and kept an eye on it. It dropped a little but I put it down to a possible air lock moving into the header tank. The missus got back to the car from work and there's coolant under the car, about half to a third of a pint. She pops the bonnet and it's dipped below the minimum. She tops it up, as she adds coolant it eventually levels up to just under the max line. Gets home and pops the bonnet, the coolant level is now a couple of inches above the max. What is going on?
A mate at work mentioned impeller bearing or water pump. Not happy!

Gawd, z-Germans eh! Where is the coolant leaking from?

Crumbs Googling possible issues/solutions for this model has sent my head in a spin!

Radiator or split hose seem to be pretty common reports.

How's the oil look?

I can't see, it's very tight. I'll pop out again and take a look now it's cooled down.

Looks like it's coming from a hard pipe that heads into the engine. It's hidden under this heat shield thingy.

Well, the car went back to the garage. They say the system has been pressure tested and is fine. Coolant surely can't just spill out of a closed system unless there is a leak? Or am I missing something?

Hmmm, was the pressure test done on a cold engine?

Might it be something obvious like a duff expansion cap? They can fail to hold pressure although you'd have thought this would have shown on a pressure test, unless they removed the cap and pressurised from the expansion tank?

Caps are cheap and easy to fit so that would be my next option.

Is the bleed procedure a right pickle on these? Maybe an odd air lock somewhere? The gauge isn't showing any signs of over heating? The heater works?

....aaaaaand it's wet itself again :banghead:

This car has been nothing but headaches, can we get our money back after 2 months of continuous faults?

A few years ago I used some Bars Leaks in my old Hyundai which blocked up the little hose that goes from rad to expansion tank,
luckily I checked later with a hot engine and found the top hose blown up like a balloon as the expanded water couldn't go where it needs to.
Could you have a similar problem so it doesn't show until engine gets hot?
I also found on the same car that conventional worm drive hose clips didn't work as parts of the rad were plastic and loosened the clamps when the plastic expanded- the wire clips that you squeeze to put on worked perfectly.

I know a few who have had hard to solve coolant issues with golfs over the years
my eldest son had all sorts on his old gti think I finally found the fault
found the expansion tank had a slight split in the seam
it was lot better and kept hold of its coolant after I melted the plastic to seal the split
about a month later the gearbox self destructed
