Hi Guy's
After upgrading my front speakers I still felt there was something lacking in the bass department. After some research I decided to fit a tune up sub and went for the rather cool Alpine SWD-1600 (about £100 - £150 depending on outlet).
An extremely helpful and skilled chap at my local Halfords fitted it for me and let me take some pictures. Excuse the crap quality but I had to use the mobile.
As you can see, the central part of the dash that houses the radio is held in by 3 screws on top and 2 below. You can then pull out the whole radio and work on the back.
You will need to follow Pottsy's guide to get most of the dash off, then pop off the top cover that's under the sat nav screen and you're away.
I've included a pic of the side of the radio showing model number etc. in case this helps with an iPod solution.

By the way, The sound quality is amazing. I now have really cool bass from the Alpine, which is hidden away on the floor under the glove box. (still leaving plenty of room for passengers feet)

cheers
Roger

Hi Dieselpower,

The Sub wires into the front speaker wires no problem. It comes with the option of an aux connection or
speaker feed. If you look really carefully at the second pic you'll see a brown, stripped wire ready to be
connected.

By the way, It's held down to the floor with loads of heavy duty velcro and it's working a treat.

cheers

Hi,

I have been considering an ipod/aux-in solution for a long time now and from the forums here i could not figure out for sure what type of cable will go in the aux port at the back of the radio.

Now that you have actually been to the back of the radio :) could you tell me how many pins does the aux port have?

By the way, in the second picture you have posted you can see the back of the radio quite clearly. Is the aux port the second one from right?

Also, I don't have a satnav in my Civic. Will it make any difference in the location of the aux port and its specifications?

Thanks

The white connector is the AUX one, i'm pretty sure. I still can't figure out if the ipod solutions on ebay are suitable :(

Hi basegreen,

Are you looking at ebay.co.uk or ebay.com? I can't seem to find anything at ebay uk. I would prefer it if i did because it's nearer to me.

Many thanks for the info Roger. Just a couple of questions if I may please..........

1. What speakers did you upgrade to and how much did they cost if you don't mind me asking? Did Halfords fit them too?

2. Did Halfords charge extra for fitting? If so, how much?

Bet is sounds great now!

Cheers.

Hi Hurmund,

Sorry for the late reply, just noticed the post.
The speakers are Audio Design (not sure which models) and were fitted by a car radio specialist, not Halfords.
Halfords charged £40 to fit the sub, not bad as it took the guy over 2 hours

cheers

Thanks Roger.

Is the Alpine sub powerful enough to sit in the 'secret' boot compartment do you thinik? Not sure there is much room in the passneger footwell - my missus has big clumsy feet!

Also Roger. Do you think I should relace the rear speakers as well, or does it sound ok just replacing the front? What size were the speaks you replaced in the front........6 or 6.5inch?

Sorry about all the questions!

Hi Hurmund,
I've just measured the speakers that came out of the front and they are 6".
I never bothered with the rear ones, mainly as I never drive in the back :D
Having said that I'm sure it would sound even better.

The sub easily fits in the footwell. I put big velcro in there and pushed it right up the back and it's fine. I don't think you'd hear it from the cubbyhole in the boot though.

cheers

Roger- the model number you quote on the back of the head unit? Is it the same number for all 06 Civics, as I have an audio dealer that is sure a ipod link is available

Hi Nadz,

I don't know if it's the same on all of 'em. I would imagine it is though. Er... I think some of the lower spec models have a lesser radio though.
I'd be very, very amazed if there were a link though. Almost everybody on this forum has been after one form day 1.
Good luck

Many thanks Roger on all the advice - much appreciated.

I presume you had 6inch speakers fitted then if the old ones were 6inch. In another post thought that I think Pottsy made, he had 6.5inch speakers fitted. Perhaps both can fit in I guess.

Back to the Alpine sub.........can you see it from the driver's seat while your driving?

Hi Hurmund,

No you can't see it at all from the drivers side as it's too far up into the footwell. I also have the floor mat over it, this lifts the mat up a bit but not much and it means you can't see it from outside the car. Good theft deterrent.

Perhaps check with Potsy about the speakers. I measured the old one's but only across the rim inside edges. Perhaps you need to measure from the screw hole or something, which might make the 6.5
I never saw the box as they were fitted at the car audio place.

cheers

no offence to Roger Harris' photos and stuff here.
Pottsy can you please fit this sub and make a step by step dummy's guide so I can do it?

Hi hurmund, I fitted Infinity 6510 cs speakers at the front. The measurements are - overall diam 6.5 inch (166 mm) and the cone diam is 5.56 inch (142 mm).

Hope this helps.
