I find myself looking at wheels online a lot even though I have some very nice pro race 1.2s in 18". I keep mulling over getting some 17s; can anyone who has made this move comment on any improvements or issues in doing so? How noticeable is any difference and does it alter the drive of the car in any way?

ON a test drive of the new Honda civic I drove the same car with 18 in 235 - 40 and one with 17 in -235 - 45 and I found no difference in the handling at all but the 17 in 235 - 45 was a better ride on bad rod surfaces not as jarring if that helps .

It does, thanks. I'm hoping for a slightly better ride, sometimes I have to hold the car back on poor roads and would like a bit more consistency and improved traction.

I have tested this on my FN2 and the 45 profile on the 17s does help absorb bumps a bit better, seems to hang on round corners slightly better as well.

On a side note if you ever put your team dynamics up for sale, I would be interested :smile3:

Good point @flashy, a stiff suspension/low sidewall are great for the track but for a daily driver you want compliance. Otherwise you'll actually go slower, as you're starting to find. I did too until I got my Meisters set-up right.

Well, I don't know about your wheels, but I had switched my heavyweight OEM FN2 18" to lightweight 17" BBSes from Lancer EVO (around 4 kg lighter per corner) and I was amazed with a difference. There is noticable improvement in almost every dynamic aspect - car feels much livelier - like it gained 15-20hp, ride is much better, during hard cornering on uneven surfaces car feels more planted simply beacuse suspension can react quicker with less unsprung mass.
With mine ~230hp car, I have not spotted a difference in terms of traction, but overall it's more down to the tires.
Still, I have spoken to one of my collegau who said that his Fn2 on OEM 18 inch wheels has more traction than on lighter 17" like mine, but I think it's just down to the fact that more energy is wasted to rotate them - less lbf ft on wheels=less wheelspin. I would not bother with that opinion anyway, cause his Fn2 is ~260 hp with 5.3 FD, so he's struggling for traction anyway :)

The traction bit is exactly why I switched to 18s not 17s.

My 18s are around 3kg a corner lighter than oem, I wouldn't be shedding much extra weight changing to 17s, if any. If I keep my 18s I'll be putting oem size tyres on (225 instead of the 215 on it atm). Plus, I'll be looking at tyres like ado8r or r888 etc.

Yeah, pro race are quite a bit lighter than stock. I run 225/40/18 with et40. I expect some rubbing when car is lowered and on track. I can shave off another 5mm (et45) which should still clear brakes and eliminate rubbing.

17 with 45 profile tyre will give better ride and compliance/comfort

Handling will improve but most would never be able to notice this difference. Pick up is tad better too

Im on pro race 1.2 18 et 45 and also dropping to 17 for reason above once gone through my tyres.

The only reason why I would go 17s is to drop car more and have no rubbing on track. Handling on lighweight 18 is not much different to 17 . Yes, comfort might be a bit better due to bigger tyre side wall but not necessarily so great on track (assuming that weight difference isn't big). Also, different tyre will feel different as well as it depends how hard the side wall is. As I'm planning to supercharge mine one day, I don't like the idea of 350hp on 17s.

Testing some 17x8 ce28n at present. Sadly they need refurb so not sure keeping them. Those that know process to refurb near to oem rays finish will know its very expensive

2kg lighter than the 18x8 pro race 1.2 I also have

Got my eyes on som3e 17x7 pro race 1.2. Weigh in at 7.8kg compared to my 9kg 18x8s

I've literally been having the same dilemma recently, I have 18x8 pro race 1.2 and was wondering if dropping an inch would make an improvement to handling, I don't really care too much about comfort. Anyway I had an frs today so ill be sticking with the same size wheels for now, I'm interested in seeing where this goes though...

The rolling radius needs to stay the same, so the tyre sidewall on 17s needs to be taller - so the car will be at exactly the same ride height.

People who change to 225/45/17 from 225/40/18 will see the car sit 1.5mm lower. Tyre size of choice.

Just be careful reducing contact patch by that amount. Smaller than oem wheel at 7"
Hmmm. Is anyone running 17x7? You can still put 225s on a 7j but that is the max. I could run 215/45/17 and be fine, currently on 215/40/18s.

For grip, comfort and height 225/45/17
For a ghetto shorter FD simulator 225/40/17

215 should be OK for the road but the tyres I temporary had on that came with the alloys were like 215/40/17 or something, the grip was MUCH worse but the wheel torque bump was super fun, felt like a go cart... on ice however :lol:
