Just been out with my drinking buddy, he has just had his dealer put winter tyres on his Mercedes. He is also insured through Mercedes, underwritten by Aviva. He rang them and they have actually knocked £20 off his premium, because they encourage the fitting of winter tyres, so maybe worth a phone call. He will get this winter discount applied each year automatically.
Apparently it does depend on what size you put on. They discourage the fitting of smaller steel wheels, saying that the car is designed to run on the the size fitted. As Robbo says they must be within manufacturers spec.
