LED Footwell Illumination (picture heavy)

Just a little teaser. It is quite hard to take a proper video. Photos are useless because camera over expose. In reality the lights are touch brighter than in the clip. Whole setup is on wireless dimmer.
Used 4x 16mm LED. Looks really neat.

Please read whole guide before doing anything. If unsure ask before touching anything. I will explain later how to disassemble rear seats and how to wire the stuff up.

I wouldn't recommend to tap into dome light. There are curtain airbags on the side and it will be bad idea to have any wire running around there. I soldered needle like pins to the wire and pushed them into the plug on the driver side fuse box. No cutting or stripping any of the wires. Because I'm a big bloke and my hands are big too I had to remove whole box. Is being held by 2 screws. Take picture of the box so you remember which plug goes where. The plug you want is the one on the top left comer on the back of the fuse box (when looking from the front). You want light blue and light green wires. Sorry but I can't remember which one is which one. The positive wire is always hot. If you have no tools just remove the dome light completely and use led to check it. Connect negative to the screw point on the roof and test remaining wires with your positive.* When* the led lights up that is your +. Write it down. Before working on the fuse box disconnect the battery and press brake pedal few times to drain any*charge from the system. Unplug everything in front , remove box. Pin your wire into the plug, plug everything back and recconect the batt. Check if your led is working correctly.* If ok disconnect the batt. Remove all front plugs from fuse box, reinstall the box into its original position, plug everything back in, recconect the battery. While wiring remaining lights remove the dome light fuse.*

I connected mine to the dome light just to see how they actually worked, just held in place with the bulb. They worked great, but yeah because of the air bags I wouldn't want to route wires down the side pillars.

Would you have a pic of the actual plug you connected to? I might be able to get in there without the need to remove the fuse box:D...there's no way I would even attempt that anyway lol.

TBH, I've routed my dashcam power down the pillar... Popping the top part of the pillar trim out is easy (Just one clip at top) allowing you to pass any wire over the top of airbag (Plenty of space due to way airbag is mounted... even just follow the loom thats there) then follow door rubber down.. this even has space in it that hold the wire safe. Will take 5 mins max.

I'd rather do this than pull my MCIU/Fuse box apart!

The dome light in the centre of the roof panel is the only one that lights up when the doors are opened, the front map lights on mine don't operate like this, so the wires would most likely have to run down the panel between front and back doors, so the wires would be running down along side the airbag, but I assume the dome light wires would be running down there also, so might be ok???

There is confusing information out there, Lots of different fuse setups, colours, etc for slightly different models, years.

This is finally the first post I see that might get me closer to setting this up as you all seem to have the same car I have. guys i have spent hours trying to find the right light green and light blue dome light cables on the fusebox side of things in the last few days and was about to give up but this thread gives me new hope, I never looked behind the fuse box.

SOooo any chance of a picture showing which cables/connector is the one to tap into? All the obvious visible ones on the front of the fusebox are no go. I have tried them. I did not see a connector on the back of the fusebox, will search for it now. But any chance of a picture? can i get to the connector without removing the whole fusebox?

And found it! it was a matter of taking the fuse box off like you said. And the connector is in the top left corner of the box. It is a small green connector has 4 cables, the light blue, the light green a white one and another one can't remember. Testing the green and blue cables with the multimeter connect directly into the dome light cables. So i am tapping those now, tomorrow I connect the LEDs but am happy!! search over.

Cheers!

Hey Thunderdome, do you have the exact same car as us? Civic Euro i-vtec 2012 (nz and aux) or Civic Es? cause otherwise the cables and arrangement are going to be completely different.

If you do have the exact same car, if you look under driver seat you will immediately see the fuses at the bottom, and at the top of those the three main Molex bottom blue, then white then green. On the top left corner of this box BUT BEHIND it you will see the little green connector with 4 cables coming out of it. These are the ones to tap.

Then yes, what has been described on this website is what you need to do. Light green and light blue wires. The 4 cable little connector ON THE BACK placed Top left of the ECU/fusebox when seen from the front. You need to follow the instructions above and disconnect the whole box so you can access the rear.
