ABS modulator failure

Last week after a few times heavy breaking on snow when the ABS kicked on the warning lights on my dashboard went on (BS + VSA + !) with the message to check the system + ABS + VSA. After searching the forum hoped that it's just a fuse, or in the worst scenario the ABS sensor. I took it to the local garage to plag it into computer but they couldn't help me so I book the car with the Honda dealer. They check it and the result is that the ABS modulator is dead and it needs replacement = ÂŁ1100.00!!!. As the car is out of warranty now and I did not want to spend that money I took the car from Honda hoping that I can find that modulator (whatever it is) on the e-bay for better price. Does anybody know if the ABS modulator is the same as the ABS pump? What should I search for? Thanks

Dont know what you should be searching for but go to a scrap yard for that mate, tell em honda want a few hundred quid for one and you was hoping to get it for 50 quid or summit, you never know your luck! ;)

Then maybe ask a private garage you trust to fit it for you.

That's exactly my plan. I already found a guy who has got civic parts for sale. He told me that he has got ABS but he doesn't know much about it (same like me) so we are not sure what he should look for . When I searched the internet there was very little about ABS modulator so I need at least a picture or good description where in the car it is and how it looks like

sorry to hear your problems, i have a electronic civic worksop manual, i have copied and text one how remove / fit a new modulator unit. the unit is located drivers side front wheel arch, involves removing bumper etc. Also, and this maybe wrong, but there is a part number of SMG6E00D10600012345KDAD01 mentioned in the manual.

removal / refit instructions:

Removal:

1) remove inner fender

2) remove front bumper

3) Disconnect the ABS modulator-control unit 26P connector (A) by pulling up the lock (B); the connector disconnects itself.

4) Disconnect the six brake lines from the ABS modulator-control unit.

NOTE: Brake lines are connected to the master cylinder (C) and to the right-front (D), the left-rear (E), the right-rear (F), and the left-front (G) brake systems.

5) Remove the ABS modulator-control unit (H) with the bracket (I) from the body.

6) Remove the ABS modulator-control unit from the bracket.

Installation

1.
Install the ABS modulator-control unit on the bracket.

2.
Install the bracket with the ABS modulator-control unit.

3.
Reconnect the six brake lines, then tighten the flare nuts to specified torque.

4.
Align the connecting surface of the ABS modulator-control unit 26P connector to the ABS modulator-control unit.

5.
Lower the lock of the ABS modulator-control unit 26P connector, then confirm the connector is fully seated.
6.
Install the guard.

7.
Install the front bumper.

8.
Install the front inner fender.

9.
Bleed the brake system.

10.
Start the engine, and check that the ABS indicator goes off.

11.
Test-drive the vehicle, check that the ABS indicator does not come on.

NOTE: If the brake pedal is spongy, there may be air trapped in the modulator and then induced into the normal brake system during modulation. Bleed the brake system again.

Hope this helps.

The CD i have is this one: honda civic workshop manual cd pdf 2006-2009 on eBay (end time 30-Jan-10 23:41:21 GMT)

Just a quick update - I bought on e-bay abs pump + modulator (ÂŁ115), and went today to my local garage to get it fit. When I later arrived to pick up the car, mechanic told me that he found something (?) burned on my original ABS so he fix it and didn't need to change the ABS at all!!! Now it works perfectly, no warning lights, nothing. They charge me for that repair ÂŁ220 (I think that only because I told them what they wanted to charge me in Honda - ÂŁ1040!!!). I am returning the ABS back to the e-buy seller so altogether it costs me around ÂŁ300 which is not bad considering the Honda quote. It's just a shame that you take a car to a dealer hoping that if nobody else they must now the car and how to fix it and all they can do is just replace the part. Well I will probably stay away from Honda dealers as far as I can.

Nice to know its sorted! I'd try and find out what caused the burning tho so it doesn't happen again. Honda probably would have still changed the box as it could have been that malfunctioning that caused it.

Hi Pottsy,

Thanks for letting me to join the civic info.

My name is Len. I am a newbie! I have a 57 plated type r fn2. I had issues with ABs, vsa, brake light and exclamation lights on for few months. They normally came on in first time in the day. After the trip to work, the lights didn't come on afterwards. I have the Abs pump changed few days ago. But the lights still came up as usual.

Before that, the deal show there are issues, open circuit with modulator 54-1, and 73-1 yaw rate sensor failure. All the abs sensors was checked by my local garage. What else it can do now.

Thanks
