I've just taken delivery of an 09 Civic. The USB connection inside the central console is unlike any USB I've ever seen. In fact it's described in the manual as a USB 'adaptor cable socket'. Manual also says 'car comes equipped with an 'adaptor cable''. Except mine didn't and the dealer seems useless about it (so far). Am I missing something?? Or can anyone advise of the cable required and whether it should come with the car?

Interesting reading this thread....i have a 2009 (number plate) Type R but my VIN has FN2 08. So this means i missed out on the HID's, memory seat and USB? Gutting!! Any reason for this? Thanks in advance

Same Problem

Hi, I bought a used 2009 model Civic 1.8 Sport here in Germany. And I didn't get this cable. It seems that even the Honda dealer at least here in Hamburg don't even know that there's this cable.
One car dealer offered my a cable (it seems to be the official Honda-price) for about 70€!
As Deus Ex Machina said - this is daylight robbery!

70€ is not worth to buy it. But I guess you guys have also no idea, where to get it cheaper? I've never seen this cable on ebay.

Thanks to the preposter. It took me like 30 minutes on the internet to find anything about this mysterious USB Adapter cable. This Thread seems to be they unique source on the entire web! At least I know the Part number thanks to you guys!

Hi Guys, I'm an old (nearly retired) newbie and would like some help with this ipod connection, I'm collecting my new civic on Friday and I know it has a cable in the armrest because I've seen it. My question is, what happens when I connect ipod via the usb, her indoors has a Jazz and we plug the ipod in the aux headphone jack and the music comes out the speakers. Is the usb better?

Hi everyone we had exactly the same problem with usb connection in our honda civic. We have bought ex demonstration car with 10 plate,es version. We were so exited but we didn't know that cable should be in the arm rest, after looking in every single shop with computer equipment where no one knew what we were talking about, we discovered this forum. We made a few phone calls to customer care and today we received our usb lead from our dealer, cuz that lead has to be part of the car. There are no doubts about that.Thank u for your questions and answers which were very helpful for us.

Looks like you have a 2010 car. As far as I can tell 2009 onwards have a different head unit than the 2007 model, USB not CD Changer. That would explain it. I am looking at the Dice adapter now as I think it offers the best compromise functionality. Unless a 2009/10 head unit will fit in a 2007 car?

sadly it's only Honda that supply the USB adapter cable :( Costs you £60 and gives you a standard USB Female port to plug all your tech into. Part number is 39114-TFO-003. Found this information on another thread

Honda was doing a retro fit USB but due to a glitch in the firmware on the device it didn't work, so are looking at a solution but don't get your hopes up lol, if you want iPod connectivity I recomend the Honda kit as this charges the new generation and older generation of iPods unlike the dice kit that my friend installed at the weekend. Also if your handy with the tools they are fairly easy to install

???? Not sure what you mean, the 09 USB on the Civic works well.... Some have had issues with some iphones where the HU says Format, but ios update or re-boot of the device normally sorts it.

Probably already mentioned but if its labeled USB they why is it not USB. Why the hell put a socket like that on display and then have a wire to make it USB, *** car designers, that extra lead should be hidden.

This is what you should see at the rear end of your arm rest, after you've opened it.

The only problem is, the USB port beneath the left cover isn't an ordinary USB port, actually.
That's why you should have an adapter cable, included with the car (located inside the arm rest or maybe in the glove box).
If that cable is missing, you should have "a serious word or two" with whoever sold you the car. ;)

As for the CD/AUX button, it won't do much until you've inserted a CD into your stereo
or attached a memory stick to the USB port using the mentioned cable
(btw. don't use the drive inside your glove box, if there's one, it's meant for the DVD of the nav system, only).

Yeah i've got the Power Outlet and Aux, just not the USB, it's just a blanking plate.

Thats why I was asking about just getting the USB fitted.

Ok, so your car is in fact a 08 model.
That's bad luck, indeed, as the depicted ports are not available for pre-facelift models.
You can't even fit them, because those cars have another stereo which doesn't support those ports.
Unfortunately, I'm not quite familiar with according aftermarket products in this context, sorry, but as far as I know, there are only three options left for you.

Spend a lot of money to have a facelift or an aftermarket stereo with MP3 support fitted (in the 2nd case you'll need another dashbord cover as well), which isn't really a considerable option, is it?

Or you may use a MP3 player together with an FM transmitter.
To get the sound as good as can be, that transmitter has to be located near the antenna (anyway, you won't get the same quality than with some native MP3 supporting hardware) and since you will have to control your fiiles via the MP3 player you should have one that's very easy to handle, even whilst driving.

You may also attach your MP3 player to the AUX port, on the back of the stereo.
For the stereo, it's like the player was a CD changer.
There are adapter cables available for that, depending on what player you own.
Be aware, you have to put your files into folders (max. files per folder = 99) called CD01, CD02, CD03, etc. ...

Perhaps you'll find some useful hints, too, about what to do in the Wiki, section "DIY and How-To" (see link on top of the current page).
