Errrr NO I don't mean 4th gear, otherwise I would have said 4th gear! I've been driving long enough to know the difference, believe it or not.

Sounds like something's wrong with your motor to me.

Steve
ive attached something pottsy did a while ago showing the optimum changes for a remapped civic which led me to ask the question so if youre car is doing 85 in 3rd i suspect your speedo has gone wrong mate :( i wish it was possible believe me i do

Those figures are for optimum gear changes rather than maximum speed in each gear. What they are showing is that for the fastest acceleration it is better to change up when either max power or max torque or both have been utilised. A re-map will have no bearing at all over the top speed in any gear but will massively effect the time taken to get up to those speeds.

I think I remember being able too reach about 90 mph in third in my 2.2 but not totally sure, I am sure that the Mazda 3 2.2 deisel would hit over 80 in third.

if you look at the rpm for the gear change you will see that there isnt much left to go but from the same thread the standard 2.2 at just before the limiter in 3rd now unless you change the box how can you go any faster in the same gear??

By taking the revs from the 1st gear change point (not the rev limiter) of 4670 and and multiplying by the mph per revolution in 3rd gear gives you 81 mph. Not sure at what revs the limiter cuts in at so can't give you the exact figure.

Just found this http://www.civinfo.com/forum/engines-and-transmission/12759-rev-limiter.html thread that suggests the rev limiter does not come in till over 5000 RPM. At 5000 RPM with the gearing off the info you have attached would equate to 87 MPH in 3rd gear, and if, as one person on the thread suggests that the limiter is actually set at 5500 RPM that would equate to over 90 MPH in 3rd gear.

gentlemen i humbly apologise my car will achieve 85mph in 3rd gear and may have actually gone further but mechanical sympathy prevented it. It certainly isnt the best way to drive it to achieve maximum acceleration but it is possible. im now going to bake a custard pie for my face...........

Rocks back and forth in chair repeatedly muttering to self! :D

So for arguments sake, theoretical speed at 4,500rpm in 6th is 155mph!!! if there was enough BHP...........

The figures give you an opportunity to check RPM vs MPH.
See what the RPM says you actually are doing...
..compare to what the speedo kids you, that you are doing

Absolutely no pie needed Coste, I for one, am in your debt for confirming that my memory isn't totally shot with age!!

Now all we need to accertain is how much power you would actually need to get too the limiter in 6th :D

Oh, and the whereabouts of your private test track :D:D,
