Check all earthing points. Including engine ones. One of your earth cables could have broken causing you grief, pulling from other circuits.

Also what condition is your battery in? Is your alternator charging at approximately 14.5v?

I went out after the heavens exploded. I checked all fuses, they were fine. I then noticed bluey white gunk around battery terminals. I took them both off and gave them a good clean. I checked the ignition lights and they all went off when I started the car, can't believe it was something so simple. I wonder if that might fix the power steering issues.

Nice one! Brilliant that it's 'fixed' it. Electrical systems on cars are really sensitive to low voltage situations. If a system is pulling more power and the whole car can't replace this, it'll flag up an error. Even a duff battery or alternator can cause issues.
