Rough gearchange on a 2009 2.2 CDTi

Hi All
In the 3.5 years we have owned our 2009 CDTi CRV the gear change has been rough. It improves in the summer months but in the winter it’s awful when cold especially from first to second but does improve when the car is warmed up. When the car has been serviced at the dealers I have enquired many times regarding a remedy and the reply has always been "it normal, that's the way they all are".

M question is, would changing the gearbox oil or flushing the gearbox improve things, or is there any adjustment that could be made that would help?

Regards

questions and first thoughts........
rough gearbox from new.....'they are all like that' . I'd complain to the manager if not Honda UK on poor customer aftercare and diagnosis.
Personally i hate it when I'm told something like that, makes my blood boil. Years ago I was palmed off with a similar statement by a service techician at a mercedes main dealer when my G-wagon developed a problem. Blew the gearbox 2000 miles later and was told .......'if only you had brought it in earlier'.

has the gear oil been changed yet?

important question.......have you used it for driving through floodwater?

comes to mind that if you have used it in water perhaps as deep as the drive shafts there may possibly be a few litres of mayonaise in the gearbox.
no problem in warm weather as such, but when temps drop to freezing the change becomes slow and clunky until warmed up again.
Basicly the mayo thickens or even freezes.

Happened to my golf a couple of years ago, took 4 flushes to get anywhere near to having 'oil' in the box.

My CRV is same year and model as yours and gear box was a bit notchy when I bought it 9000 miles ago with 38000 on the clock.

I had the clutch changed under warranty in November and gear box oil was changed at same time and gear change is much better. Still a bit notchy, but I'm happy with it..

Thanks for the replies.

Interesting point, I did drive through some deep flood water when the cars only 6 months old but I never made the link between that episode and the poor gear change.

To answer the wizard question. No the gearbox oil has not been changed to my knowledge, although the car did have a clutch change at about 22,000 miles as did yours. Manufacturing issue with the clutch!!

I have a good local garage so I will ask for the oil to be replaced to see if it results in a smoother gear change, can’t be any worse!!

I will report back if it makes a difference....

Cheers

Old clutch fluid can result in the clutch not moving enough, equating to the flywheel not disengaging from the gearbox as much as it should. Can result in gears that are harder to change. New fluid bled properly at the slave cylinder will make the clutch move as far as possible. Common ctdi issue and is the first step and cheapest step. Then change the gearbox. They are all slightly notchy but that will def help, particularly when cold.

I'm pretty certain they are separate.

Has this continued over to the new model. My 2013, 14000m 2.2D has a very notchy gearbox, particularly 1st to 2nd. The clutch pedal feels like it's near the top of its travel as well.

I've only had it for a few weeks and it was an ex-Honda UK car. I'm not sure if it's something I need to be worried about.

Hi Quietlife

I have had the gearbox oil changed and it has made a small difference but not much. At the next service I may have the clutch fluid changed but again I am not sure how much difference it will make, as it appears to be a "characteristic" on the CRV as my dealer tells me!!

I have owned the car since 2009 and if I am an honest the gear change is not a big issue and you do learn to live with it with the issue all but disappears in the summer months or when the car is warmed up. I am a little surprised to hear this issue had carried over to the new shape CRV. I wonder if any other owners of the 2012< have experience the same or is localised to your car?

I'd definitely do the clutch fluid. It's an easy DIY at home. I wouldn't pay a dealer for it. I also found the gearbox oil change did little, however it's a service item anyway and needs changed after certain mileage.

Thread Update.

At the last service my local garage greased the two gear linkages on the top of the gearbox (under the air filter box) and removed the trim around the gear knob and greased the gear linkage underneath. It seems to have improved the gear change a little but not sure if it will last but worth a try.

I hope this helps:)
