Something like Lanoguard is easy (although a bit messy) to apply, definitely won't do any harm

 

Does it not require some degree of technical knowledge and skill? It is worth paying for someone to do?

 

No particular skill required but it is messy. I had the car jacked up on axle stands all round and thoroughly pressure washed everything underneath. The next day when it was dry (this was last summer) I sprayed Lanoguard on every bit of metal on the underside making sure to get into any hidden parts around suspension mounting points, inner sills etc

The Lanoguard kit costs about 70.00 which sounds expensive for only 2 litres of treatment but is actually more than enough

 

I use Lanoguard, did my CR-V 2 18 months ago and still good, just did the rear torsion beam on my 2015 Civic Tourer a couple of weeks ago as I didn't have time to remove the under tray yet, night and day difference. Easy to apply and very easy for the DIY car enthusiast.

I recently used lanoguard on mine and its good stuff. Very little prep needed and a little goes a long way.
