I know it's designed for bmw but has anyone tried it with their civic mk8?

If you have an 8G 1.8 then this is from the service manual:
"Always use genuine Honda Oil, ACEA A1/B1 or ACEA A3/B3
ACEA/SAE viscosity: See chart. "
Viscosity on the left for European cars and don't worry about genuine Honda, any decent brand will do.

if you have the owners manual it's in there

I looked at it for my brothers 1.8 and the Edge 5W-30 LL

The book specs are ACEA A1/B1, A3/B3, API SL. Grade depending on ambient temperature.

The 5W-30 M meets ACEA C3 and API SN Plus and the 5W-30 LL meets ACEA C3.

So ended up with Edge 0W-30 A5/B5 which meets A1/B1 and API SL.

Not saying the others couldn't work but would rather stick to what in the book than risk the engine.

Mannol synthetic.

MANNOL ENERGY (7908) 5W-30 *ACEA C3* BMW LL04 *LONGLIFE 4 *5 LITRE* | eBay

Not from that seller but same price.

Have used 0w-20, 0w-30 and currently 5w-30.

Engine seems to perform the same whatever oil I put in it. Done about 16k or so miles with that stuff, maybe a bit more.

I did change oils every 6 months but now it comes out cleaner I'll probably lengthen the intervals!

All my oils (for the Civ, Freelander and 2 Series 1 land rovers) come from Smith & Allan in the North East, very well regarded oils - I buy in 20l tubs for a fraction of the price you'd pay for fancy labels & marketing. Any oil that meets the Honda spec for your engine will be absolutely fine (y)

No doubt there's stuff out there that undercuts even that Mannol stuff and having a drum of oil makes it dirt cheap I imagine!

I don't think the 1.8 really cares what goes in it as long as it's the correct amount and one of the broad range of oils Honda says it takes. It's built for reliability and doesn't seem fickle at all...

Oh - and I have found 5w30 to make for as much quieter engine, I wouldn't use anything else now - we never ever see temps low enough in the UK for a 0w to have any benefit whatsoever beyond a possible minute mpg benefit, so small you may as well ignore completely.

As before I've run 0w-20, 0w-30 and 5w-30 with no refinement, economy or performance changes that I can percieve. I've just picked 5w-30 on price and the fact I use the car to commute, shop and lug the family around. I barely drive it above 3.5k, often not even 2.5k rpm.

Some will swear by 0w-20 or otherwise. Just use whatever you can afford or think is best. I think Honda themselves used to service with 0w-30 but have gone down to 0w-20. Although Coxs will sell you both grades, Honda's own is 0w-20.

Sorry for bumping an old thread. I own a low mileage 2013 1.8 i-VTEC, it's got a FHSH but have no intention of keeping that up and will service it and repair myself if possible. I owned a Mazda 2 before this and always used Comma XTECH 5W30 fully synthetic engine oil with no issues whatsoever. That was the recommended viscosity for the car though. Still have 4 litres of this left and seems a shame for it to waste so was planning on using it in the Civic. This won't be an issue will it? Just reading online a lot of US drivers seem to use this, and on a certain oil sellers website this paticular brand is recommended when I put my registration number in. Thanks for any help

Thanks, think they can use all different kinds. Opie oils were recommended 0w30 on the basis that most Honda's use oil. Mine doesn't though. There only issue with them Comma XTECH 5w30 is that it's at SL rated oil whereas there Honda stuff is SM. The other thing ACEA or whatever is within spec.
