[HOW TO] Install non OEM parking sensors - and save £250!!!!

This is based on the fitting of the CISBO non OEM parking sensors which I purchased from ebay for £27 delivered. They are a good colour match for Galaxy Grey. (The saving is actually £360 compared to the Honda kit, unless you pay a Honda dealer to fit them at approx £150)

I followed the Honda instructions for the OEM sensors here. (Thanks Pottsy)

but found them not exactly the clearest document I've read. Regardless of which sensors I believe the following is applicable:

Tools:
10mm Socket
Extension bar
Ratchet wrench
Centre Punch (or sharp tool)
Drill (preferably cordless!)
Drill bit and circular saw (supplied in the kit)
Sharp Knife
Electrical crimping tool

Parts:
CISBO 4 sensor revering kit
Cable Ties
Spade connectors
Rubber Grommet to take all 4 cables or Silcone bathroom sealant to use around cut original hard plastic grommit.
(See whats in the box: http://www.civinfo.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=364&stc=1&d=1157204817)

Note:
Do not remove all the clips on the lower edge of the bumper. There are 4 each side - leave the middle 2 of each 4 in place (these hold the triangular exhaust trim in place). (See photo http://www.civinfo.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=460&stc=1&d=1158358977)

Do not completely remove the rear wheel arch trim - pull from the rear and only go as far as required to access the retaining screw ( See Photo ) Be careful and try and ease the trim away - pull too hard and you will easily break the trim and never the clip!!!

The bumper needs to be pushed forward and the forward most edge prised out each side (See photo XX). This can be done before releasing the four retaining bolts (hidden behind the body coloured caps) - useful if you are doing this on your own!

There are different sized clips - smaller ones for the wheel arch ( See Photo ) remember this for reassembly!

The inside of the bumper is clearly marked for the 4 drilling points - drill your pilot hole from the back and use the hole saw from the painted side. You will need to undo the chuck each time and pass the saw through the hole - dont try and pull it back out.

Once the four sensors are in place you will need to cable tie the run of cables together and pass through a rubber grommit (not supplied). A cable tie each side of the grommit will prevent the cables being pulled or dropping down behind the bumber. You could also drill a small hole and cable tie the run of cables to a flange on the back face of the bumper - I didnt think this was necessary as the cables are well away from the exhausts but it would prevent too much pull on the sensors connections themselves.

I located my unit under the polystyrene floor filler - bit of cutting required nad the beeper between the middle seat belt mounts. You can get the cables out of the way without removing any trim. (you will need to remove the spare wheel well cover whichever way you do it)

The pain is running the supply up behind the rear pillar to the connector.

Putting it all back took 20 minutes - shame it took an hour to realise how to release the rear bumper!

Well then, have you got them fitted? I am thinking about the CISBO pack at £27 from e-bay, the grey look to be a good match with cosmic, what colour did you go for??

Get the pics on and let us all know.

PS: noticed you have de-badged - did you have to destroy the badges on removal??

Just trying to decide if the clean lines will look extra smart, or like the bodyshop have forgotten to replace after a rear ender!!

Grey is a Galaxy grey

The Grey is definately a closer match to the Galaxy - you will probably need to spray them. Most manufacturers recommend buying the unpainted sensors if you need to paint them, probably as too much paint will reduce their sensitivity.

Hi Miggins,

My car's Galaxy Grey too, and wondered how good the colour match is with the grey sensors? I imagine that getting them resprayed to get an exact match would cost more than just a couple of quid!

Also, I've found the Cisbo sensors on ebay, they look a really good price. Did you buy the ones with the LED display? If so, how did you mount the display? I'm guessing that you put it in the rear head lining.

I'd love to do the job, and I'm pretty handy with a toolkit, but I don't want to shag it and have to walk shame faced into the dealers! You don't do a mobile fitting service do you?) I live in Kettering!

(Trying to save up to have the Civic superchipped, it feels a bit gutless after my Golf!)

They are so close a match to Galaxy Grey you won't want to get them sprayed. Poss a little darker - see completed pic.

Sorry - I'm too tired to finish the jobs on my car at the moment but happy to talk you thro it - I need to add some more detail to the todo  !!!!!

£21 ebay sensors

Just fitted them took 3 hours ,work fine. All wiring/parts hidden behind panels as in Honda manual.Very slightly darker than Galaxy Grey, but for £21 what a saving.Great Buy.

They start to work as soon as reverse is selected.Although you have to get used to the beebing distances 12" constant,18" single etc.I have used Honda sensors and other brands on cars the only differance i believe is this distance thing. Some Honda sensors have a different tone for the corner sensors which is good. But for the price you cant loose out trying these.

Trust me I'm colour blind!

You really won't want or need to paint them.

hope the pic helps (White paper backgroung taken with flash) the colour of the pic is repressentitive of the real colour

Scol - you beat me to posting a close up.

They are exactly the same (reassuring they are a consistent colour) and unless you get down low and close nobody will notice that they are slightly darker.

If you do want to fit the honda kit after trying these, I believe the holes required in the bumper for the Honda kit are bigger
- not that I could see any reason to!

Take a deep breath, counting slowly to 10 - release!

Try powering them direct to confirm whether it is the unit or a faulty/incorrect connection to the Honda circuit.

Simple bulb and some leads will tell you if the loom is powering up as expected when you have the Civ in reverse with the ignition on.

:(

Must confess to testing mine before fitting - but you didn't need to hear that. Give me a shout if you need help.

Figured out what the problem was, the inline connector block that I tapped into the wiring loom hadn't connected with the feed for the sensors... pah!

After grafting on in the dark I got the sensors working. Then, whilst putting the interior back together, I was mounting the buzzer when the bloody thing came away from it's wire! Grrr..... I tried opening the buzzer to resolder the wire but it was a sealed unit (note use of past-tense!) and it smashed to bits when I tried to pry it.

BEWARE! THE WIRES ON THE BUZZER ARE V.THIN.

Anyway, the guy on ebay is providing a replacement for £4, so that should sort it.

Thought of buying another buzzer from Maplins for a quid or two to try out until the replacement unit arrives. Wires might be more robust too!

Miggins, thanks for all your help. Couldn't have done it without you.

wish i had fitted mine myself, as the dealer chiped my bumper for no extra charge, very nice of them.

Hi , do any of you guys have any experience of the "Taurus T123" ? This would apear to negate the need for drilling holes in the bumper. I realise it's more expensive but it does-away with the potential for **** ups !
