Have you had the car long? Are the painted Honda one? They sound faulty. They should be working the way you think, not the way you describe they are

my initial thought that it was a time out error, I reversing for as long as it takes for me to put the car in the garage, generally no more than 2 minutes, in that time it starts beeping as it picks up the garage walls and then seconds later it goes quiet. To get the beeps back I have to re-engage reverse.

I've had the car since december '06.

I'm going to give my local dealer, which has a good reputation, a call tomorrow - so will update then.

Sounds faulty to me.

My parking sensors were useless and beeped all the time when I first took delivery. I strongly suspect they were just installed by the dealer and not calibrated.

I took the car back within a week for the sensors to be adjusted. The dealer wanted the car ALL day, but somehow managed to get them adjusted within 30 minutes when I informed the Service droid I'd got mumps and would like to wait. (You've never seen anyone step back as fast as he did!)

Sensors MUCH better now, but still occasionally 'go off on one' when I put it in reverse.

So, I'd suggest have a fat neck, or wear a scarf.

I rang dealership this morning, they agreed there shouldn't be a time-out on the system and it could be a faulty sensor, goes in on Friday for a technician to have a look at it.

My genuine Honda sensors do this as well.

If you reverse and the sensor pick up an obstruction then the beeping starts - If you then stop reversing, the beeps continue for a few seconds then fall silent - so it looks (sounds) like they do time out.

However, as soon as I start moving again, the beeps start again. (ie I don't have to disengage, and then re-engage reverse)

Also, as FWH says, the car doesn't need to be moving for the sensors to pick up an obstruction - somebody walking behind the car will trigger the sensors.

 

My EX factory fitted are exactly the same. When I stop the beep stops until I start moving again. Thank goodness they do as otherwise it would be maddenly obtrusive.

 

We are seeing a pattern then.

I didn't get the Honda official ones (not my choice) and mine just keep on beeping, or when I'm about 2" from the garage wall one continuous tone.

Yes it could, potentially. Althought the Honda ones give you a solid beep at about 6"-9". Slightly off topic, but if you reverse up to a wall and wait until the solid beep, then you can't open the tailgate!

I was reversing my car into the garage a couple of weeks back, to fit my spoiler, and the reversing sensors were pretty useless. Once I got close to the wall at the back left of the car, I got a solid beep for a few seconds and then silence as I was moving very very slowly.

 

where is the beeper for the Honda ones? - I've got 3rd party parking sensors and the beeper is in the boot

 

It is in the boot, beside the courtesy light, on the right hand side.

 

Just been down to dealer, and had it confirmed by a technician that there is a time-out on the parking sensors for when we the system thinks it parked.

My biggest concern is when parking in a garage inch/stop manoeuvres the system thinks its parked hence no beeps. which is very annoying.

Technician also said there is no way to adjust or turn off the time-out settings.

 

Did they tell you what the time-out is or do I have to go reverse up to a wall with a stop watch?

 

OK, just been out to see what the reset on my parking sensors has given me.

The shortest time-out 3 seconds, was when the an object had just been picked, so only a few beeps.

The longest time-out 20 seconds, was when the beeps were close together but not yet continuous.

overall reset has improved parking in garage but still far from ideal.

As the time-out can be personal taste and hughly dependant on circumstance (parallel parking, parking in garage, Parking space with bollard at head, etc) time-out should be adjustable.

It'll be interesting to know if they did a survey before setting the time-out, and if so who?

 

I'm struggling to think of any reason why the rear parking sensors should have a time-out.

There must be many occasions where you need to stop momentarily before continuing the manoeuvre -

and then you may have no rear parking sensors = not fit for purpose ?

 

I also don't see the reason for a time out, but presumably it is to stop them being too annoying.

Anyway, as soon as you start moving again, then the bleeper continues where it left off. If when you stopped they were giving the solid beep, then you shouldn't really be reversing any further anyway, as you are very close to an obstruction ?

 

I'm actually beginning to think that my dealer did me a favour by fitting the non Honda ones.

 

I have non-Honda ones, and they keep beeping for as long as the reverse gear is engaged. Which is how it should be, IMO.

 

Intermittant beeping combined with a reversing camera seems ideal to me.

 

And lasers! We need two lasers that converge to a singe point when you have reached minimal safe distance.

Better still, some kind of HUD overlay on the rear camera view.

 

I am seriously considering ugrading the ICE to 2DIN 6.5" monitor DVD/CD, which can be used with a rear parking camera. Just have to save up lots and lots of pennies.

Well I have Honda ones and they are no problem, no time out at all. They just keep beeping all the time in reverse. It is the first time I have had a car with these and must say I was a bit wary at first, not really trusting them, but now I think they are a godsend.
