Rain Sensor Problem

Hi, first of all I'd like to say,"What a great forum", I've been learning loads about my car since reading through this site. Brilliant! ;)

I have a problem :(, recently I had my windscreen replaced via my insurance company. Since then my auto windscreen wipers / rain sensor doesn't work. When I switch it to auto the wipers just wipe as if they were in intermittent mode even if there is no rain and it makes no difference if I change the sensitivity. They used to work great before, they glass fitter has been back since to try and remedy the problem but with no luck. He said he refitted the sensor, checked the connections and tried disconnecting the battery but still couldn't get it to work and advised I take it to honda. I have it booked in to honda for next week but wondered if any of you guys had the same problem or knew a way to fix it?
Thanks, Luke

It was either due to the first replacement windscreen being of poorer quality or the adhesive bracket that the windscreen company used to fix the sensor to the screen not fitting close or tight enough. I believe it's fairly important to have the sensor fitted right as it emits infrared that bounces directly off the windscreen back to the sensor, if water particles sit on the screen in front of the sensor some of the infrared is bounced away from the sensor which triggers the sensor to enable the wipers, the speed of the wipers are adjusted according to how much water sits above the sensor of which more or less infrared will be deflected from the sensor and alter the wiper speed accordingly.

Woo Hoo! It's finally fixed, got a new windscreen (Pilkington) and new sensor, apparently the old sensor wasn't faulty in the end but I still got to keep the new one. Honda Grantham have been brilliant, extremely helpful and nice people, I'm a happy man now :D:D

Took the car to Honda this morning, they said the sensor was faulty and needs replacing. Spoke to the windscreen company who said they would pay for a new one as long as it wasn't too expensive to replace. Honda quoted ÂŁ391 fitted! [smilie=shocked.gif]
Obviously when I rang back to the windscreen company, the man was shocked at the price and and said he couldn't authorise payment of that sort of cost and would need to speak to his boss and will call me back.

The insurance company said that the windscreen company should get it sorted out and that I could ask for an original screen instead, but thought it a good idea for honda to look at it first and the windscreen company will reimburse me with any charges incurred.

I think it's bad that they don't replace with original screens, like Jack said, if you need a wing replacement you would expect original manufacturer product, so why should windscreen be any different?

I needed a screen replacement on my 607, I knew beforehand that I needed the correct type of glass as cheapo ones might not have the correct 'place' for the sensor (think the glass is thinner, or a different material where the sensor goes to allow it to..well..sense).

Windscreen fitters came, with the wrong glass, sure it'd fit and was for the model of car but not my spec so had to go through hassle to get the right glass! Sheesh!

Make sure they have fitted the correct glass for sensing, a trivial thing but is a common mistake apparently! Especially for cars that have sensing as an option and not standard across the full range!

There can be several hundred pounds saving on a cheapo against a genuine replacement, Multiply that by the number of screens replaced over a year and Insurance Companies are saving themselves a fortune.
Phone your Company - Inform them of the events and what the replacement guys have said and the number of times that they have pondered over it.
Your wipers don't function and you want it sorted.
With a bit of luck, they MAY say - Honda screen.

I just assumed they'd change same for same.
Find it strange though how the fitter himself said he would change it for Pilkington glass as was before as it could affect the sensor, he even admitted the pilkington was superior glass to what he had just fitted, Great

Then afterwards they decide not to bother ? [smilie=smack.gif] eh!

Before you take it to your Dealer, which will cost you time and dosh, I would suggest that you phone your Insurance Company and inform them.
You CAN insist on Honda genuine parts, albeit a bit too late now.
Yes - they will give you the old blarney, on how the screens that they approve are to the same standard, but I think when they tried in on me many years ago, I said :- "If after an accident, I needed a new wing, would you specify one supplied by Ford for example.

Strange thing is though, after the second visit from the windscreen company the fitter said he would come back next time with a pilkington screen as he thought that might be the problem, but on the third visit they decided it not necessary to change the type of glass as they had come to the conclusion that it wouldn't make any difference?
