Manual or Automatic

Hi i've seen a Type S 1.8 automatic that im considering going to view - just wondered if there is any drawbacks though of having an automatic? I've only ever had manual cars and worry that in winter when I would have used the gears to slow the car down as opposed to the brakes I cant do that.
Is there any pros or cons to having an automatic?

Thanks

Some people like automatics, some dont, then theres the people that dont mind them.
I fall into the third category. I have owned an automatic car in the past, and i have no problem jumping into one and being completely comfortable with it. A friend has a Chrysler 300C auto that i find quite relaxing to drive.
Some cars are more suited to automatic gearboxes, and these tend to be large capacity powerful engines.
It is true that in stop/start town driving an automatic can be easier, but you need to keep the brake pedal pressed every time you come to a stop in gear or the car will want to move forward, which can become tiring in itself.
One disadvantage with an auto box is that you cannot select a higher gear than the car thinks is appropriate for the speed/revs. This is something you might want to do when driving on snow or ice for example, and can easily do with a manual. Also you dont have the same engine braking with an auto as was already mentioned.

It really comes down to how you like to drive. I like being in full control of the gearbox, but more and more cars are being made with semi or full auto boxes these days.

ive never owned an auto(i did consider a leon fr dsg) but do enjoy driving them.

used to love driving the corsa 1.4 auto we had as one of our courtesy cars in my old work! sad I know!

as already said, it is all down to personal preference

I always thought the auto Civic dented performance and was rubbish in shifting??!

Robbo your comment doesnt count, DSG is the greatest gearbox ever lol!

Both our car's have a DSG gearbox.
One 6 speed, the other 7 speed
They have a flappy paddles as well as the ability to change gear if you want to with the gear lever...Far more controllable than a conventional Autobox
All I can say about the system is..FANTASTIC!!
For those replying in this thread saying that autos are not for me (No experience of one )...Drive one with a DSG!!

How do they cope at very slow manoeuvres though ?

I'm talking 'very' slow ones like reverse parking in a garage to get the rear arch and nearside mirror about 1" from the wall ?

With my torque converter auto it is a breeze, with the i-shift it was horrendous.

I'm fully aware under normal driving it is a very slick box like F1 cars but which box is it nearest to for the above?

Very very slow if you want it..Foot off the gas..brake slightly to control the creep..Its nothing like an i-shift box at all
The 7 speed has hill start too

if you are a hardened autoholic like me you will use left foot braking- then manoevering an i-shift is pretty easy as if you keep on the gas a little pressing the brakes does NOT disconnect the drive (just like driving a gas/diesel forklift)
