Hello,

So I have a Mk 9 2013 (non facelifted model) 1.6 ES which only has a basic radio in it (no screen).

I would like to rip out this unit and replace with a screen (one that does car play) as well as keeping steering wheel controls, in car phone and rear parking camera

i take it that with the right fascia and connecting kit above this is possible? What is everybody’s head unit choice?

Not my first rodeo doing this and happy to get my hands dirty

input appreciated

I have a facelift 1.8 auto tourer, which had the double din but no nav. I think yours should be easier than mine. You might even be able to adjust the clock without having to disconnect the battery!
Connects2 do a fascia together with lead and fm aerial adapter. Steering wheel volume controls work, but not phone buttons (which I never use anyway).
I haven’t found an adapter for the DAB aerial yet, so I am going to try a smb to smb lead shortly to try to get it to work.
I haven found a rear camera retention interface either, so I am trying an eBay special for a 2017 Civic to see if that works. The usbs and HDMI in the centre console have non-standard fittings too.
I bought a Kenwood DMX8019DABS with Kenwood dashcam.
cheers
steve

I never went ahead with it in the end. Not that I don't want to, but it stopped being a priority with everything that's going on right now. I'd still like to at some point however but it's looking quite difficult with my trim of car (SR).

FYI.

These should do the trick. The USB retainer connects to the USB harness coming from the input in the centre console, the harness is below the Aircon unit, and a right pain to get to.

Pretty much the only plug-and-play solution out there, AFAICT. Been on a long and painful route to sorting this out. Honda wanted ÂŁ2K for a like-for-like replacement. I've gone for a Sony XAV-AX100 unit. The factory 2 DIN aperture isn't really 2 DIN, and the Sony-supplied bezel doesn't fit the space, so the head unit looks mismatched. Have a feeling one of these might be required, but holding off for now... Connects2 CT23HD25 - Honda Civic 2012> Double Din Car Stereo Fascia Panel Adaptor

The InCarTec interface is one I was looking at originally back in February but I was put off as I couldn't find any information anywhere from people who have used it. Most people seem to use the Connects2 interface which doesn't work for our head units with navigation. So is it just a case of hardwiring it in as per their diagrams, along with the USB connector you listed? You didn't lose any functionality like sensors or rear camera, apart from the clock issue?

The Sony XAV-AX100 is a decent piece of kit, I wouldn't mind something like that. Preferably I'd get something with wireless Android Auto but that's newer tech and probably comes with a price premium that isn't worth it.

I've not wired it in yet. It's on order. Will most likely lose rear cam, but will add one of these in time. Although the car is a 2015 model (Tourer), this looks like it should work, possibly with some tweaking:

Interestingly, I got an exact replacement for the factory unit on eBay for ÂŁ250, but would not operate beyond security code which cam as a surprise to me and the seller (who accepted a return). Dealer was useless. My original unit completely failed to boot (just looping on the logo screen) having been really, really flaky shortly beforehand. When it first got hot here this year. Not had any system for about 4 weeks.

Will update when done! Here's the rear of my unit, FYI.

Thanks! Please keep us all updated with the progress once your stuff arrives and you wire it up. Hopefully it goes smoothly. Since I made this thread I've gone for a Brodit phone holder to get google maps, but it looks silly when I have a 7" screen underneath doing nothing. It was a temporary solution, I still want to do a full replacement.

Just out of interest, which trim do you have? Mine is an SR. I don't actually know yet if it has a subwoofer but being high spec it has "premium audio" so I'm thinking it will. Hard to find details online.

It's an SR. Only had it since December. The head unit looks kind-of impressive at first (and it was undoubtedly a nice piece of kit) but you soon realise its limitations. Especially when it all goes tits up, and you realise just how custom it is. Would have been simpler all round if it had been fitted with a standard radio! Modern units which do Android Auto/Apple Play just make more sense to me.

Yeah it's a nice piece of kit if you don't carr about google maps. The Garmin nav isn't even that bad but it's a pain setting up routes on it, especially if you're doing a road trip with multiple stops.

The biggest problem is that Honda didn't make the Android upgradable. It only needs Android 5 for Android Auto and that was released in 2014. My car was manufactured late 2016 so I would have expected it to come with a newer version of Android than 4.0.4 which was released in 2012! I bought mine in January and to be honest I probably wouldn't have if I'd known it couldn't support Android Auto without major surgery. But on the other hand a newer car with that installed would have cost more to buy and more to tax (mine is 0 tax and they stopped that in 2017)

Motor manufacture has very long lead times. Used to work for a company which supplied touch-sensor control units for anti-trap electric windows, took years to get anything out the door on motor jobs (all the testing). So, they'r kind-of scuppered when they try to do anything fancy and cool! :-D

Hi,

i am still looking to do mine but been busy elsewhere but now back to this. Let’s do this set by step:

So I currently have a non facelift bog standard radio which means I need a new fascia double din size. It appears I can only find a black one but the plastics in the car are grey. So, those that are facelifted and grey, the OEM double din radio I read is slightly too big or too small? Can someone confirm which is which?

thank you

Sorry - just seen that this thread is for 2016 version - and I think it’s different to the 2014?

I have a 2014 Civic Tourer SR Diesel and would really like wireless Apple CarPlay functionality - but each time I’ve looked into it have found it looks too complicated. I Have successfully installed Connects2 kits in previous cars, but this Honda with it’s rear camera, the small second dashboard display, and lack of kit for the navigation unit replacement seems like there is a high chances of something going wrong.

Has anyone successfully found a kit for a relatively simple head unit replacement?

I've just bought a mk9 66 plate hatchback Civic SR trim and I'm disappointed by the head unit capabilities. It has Garmin navigation but I would prefer to use Google maps from my phone. As you know the factory head unit is using Android 4.0.4 which doesn't support Android Auto and whilst it can be updated to use Mirrorlink it seems not all phones are compatible with Mirrorlink so that's not an option for me. So I'm planning to just upgrade the head unit to something more modern.

I've done a lot of digging on the internet on how to do this and information is hard to find. From what I gather this upgrade is harder on the SR trim because it comes with navigation.

It would appear I need an interface to connect from a new head unit to the Honda car tech modules. One I keep hearing about is Connect2 but I'm not sure if this works if you have a car with navigation. I figure this one: Connects2 Ltd but it doesn't specifically mention it works if you have the navigation unit.

I've also found another which would appear to work: Honda 2012> car with original NAV radio replacement and amplifier interface - InCarTec
This one does mention it works if you have a navigation unit, however it states that you must hardwire connections. I could probably get that done if it's a necessity.

Another concern I have with head unit upgrading is losing functionality. From what I've read you only lose the ability to set the clock from the i-MID display but other functionality on that display continues to work through steering wheel controls. I'm also concerned the factory reverse camera will no longer work as expected but the interfaces above suggest it will. I'm leaning more towards purchasing the Incartec product as instructions are clearer and I know for a fact it will work with the navigation unit. Installation instructions for the hardwiring are here: https://incartec.blob.core.windows.net/instructions/23-229-nav wire mod.pdf

Has anyone done this upgrade before on an SR spec with navigation and got experience to share?

Did anyone make any headway on this? Xenor, where did your quest land you?

What did you end up purchasing, parts and all, if you succeeded?

I am on this quest as of now!
