The old MGZS has it and it's a real pain if you are transporting folk, as they all tend to open the doors at exactly the wrong time before the engine is turned off and the car unlocks and they end up being locked in. And if you do try to drop someone off at the lights and manual override, it doesn't reactivate when you pull off again so you end up with it off for the rest of the journey. If you do reactivate then you are locked into the car after the engine is turned off and you have to override again.

Don't know if the older civics have the same problem though, but it could be right pain in the backside on the MG.

In Civs that can:

If you unlock using driver's overide switch to let someone out, when you go back above 10mph they all lock again

If however, the person unlocks their own door to get out, going back over 10mph doesn't re-lock.

Oh - and if passenger unlocks, and you then turn the engine off (say because impatient daughter won't wait for the mirrors to fold...), central locking doesn't unlock.

but these are very minor niggles in something which I never expected to have in the first place


And yes - going to WatchDog with this will simply prompt Honda to reply with "What auto locking feature? We don't support an auto-locking feature".
Bit like hacking Windows XP to look like VISTA and then complaining when the next service pack reverts it to XP feel.

Allan - that's interesting, what it DOES do, if you unlock your car and then don't open any doors it will lock itself again (which is GREAT if you knock the unlock button by accident.
But that's the only thing it should do.

To enable and disable Auto Locking and Auto unlocking

To turn on auto-locking at 10mph (16kph)
- Close the driver's door
- Put the key into position II
- Hold down the door lock button until you hear two sets of "locking" noises. This takes about 6 seconds**.
- Turn the key back to position I

To turn on auto-unlocking when turning off the ignition
- Close the driver's door
- Put the key into position II
- Hold down the door unlock button until you hear two sets of "unlocking" noises. This takes about 6 seconds**.
- Turn the key back to position I

To turn off auto-locking at 10mph (16kph)
- Open the driver's door
- Put the key into position II
- Hold down the door lock button until you hear two sets of "locking" noises. This takes about 6 seconds**.
- Turn the key back to position I

To turn off auto-unlocking when turning off the ignition
- Open the driver's door
- Put the key into position II
- Hold down the door unlock button until you hear two sets of "unlocking" noises. This takes about 6 seconds**.
- Turn the key back to position I


**When you press the button you will hear the door locks activate right away. Keep the button pressed until you hear the same noise again, this should be around 6 or 7 seconds.

It is always advisable to keep your doors locked as soon as you get into your vehicle, to avoid car jacking.

Hi Guys,

I think I'll give this a go on my civic today. I can't really see any huge problems with it. Just a question though...
Will it unlock automatically when you go below 10mph or when you stop?

I also have my car booked in for its first service this thursday, I'll see if they make any changes to stop the car doing it....though over here in Ireland, I have a feeling they'll do as little work as needed (I can't decide if thats a good thing or bad thing )

Just read your thread, the door locks deactivate when you turn the engine off. Have just sent my Civic in today for a service before I go on a long trip to Austria next week. I'll be curious to know if they've deactivated the system - apparently they do because it's no longer a feature. Will let you all know.........

Just tried it there, doesn't seem to work on the 4dr
I can't figure out what button I am meant to keep pressed for about 6 sec.
The only way to lock the door in the 4dr is the switch at the door handle (see attached picture)...is that the right place?

I think you will find that it is the button you don't have! (Next to the window disable one).

It only works on 06MY hatchbacks, 07MY and saloons/hybrids have newer/different software.

Gave this a go yesterday and it works on my 06 Civic, Thanks very much, could not get the auto-unlocking when turning off the ignition working though, but when I get above 10mph now my doors lock.

Just figured out how to get the doors to unlock with ignition switch off, I needed to hold the door lock button down the other way. Doors now auto lock when going over 10MPH, then unlock when I switch off the ignition.

Haven't tried the auto lock mechanism yet, unsure if i have a 06 or 07 model, so will have to investigate.

The thing that did puzzle me was the following:

Ok... that was easy!
Also been busy using the boardcomputer menu... drove around in MPH settings for a day (usually km/h) got a nice 41MPG... refeuled and put it back to km/h because I found myself driving 100mph on the freeway... which should have been 100km/h... oops, that's playing with my drivers license!
But still... driving like my grandmother in the city, driving 100mph on the freeway scoring 40MPG is nice.
Also tried the speedwarning but got really fed up with it everytime i overtake someone my car starts to warn me i'm speeding.... yeah, i know, you made me!

Seeing as you are from NL (just like me) I really wondered how you managed to get this feature enabled, specially since my model doesn't have that extra button on the dashboard to enable KM/H --> MPH.

I also asked at my dealer if this could be enabled by some sort of software upgrade and they said: NO. The only option they could come up with was to replace the whole front dashboard with a new one and add the feature like that....
Since I go on holidays to the UK frequently I would really like to know how you managed to pull this off.

Right, having that said, back to topic; as soon as I've checked whether I have a 06 or 07 model and managed to enable auto-locking I'll be back to post my results.

Door open at 10mph to set locks???
Do you need to run alongside while carrying out this 'essential' procedure, or enlist the help of your Mother-in-Law. Would the Police believe your story at the inquest? - you would probably find yourself behind a more substantial door with 'HMP' on the front door.
Safer to loop string from passenger door handle to driver door handle, or instead, buy the latest Civic.[smilie=cheeky-grin:
