Not really backlight, but LCD segments not getting the power they need.

LCD panel needs replacing.

I've got the same problem last week so I get off the display and I noticed that some pins in the lcd panel has lost soldering, after make a quick repair everything works fine.

 

STB80 how did you take off the lcd panel? Which pins?

Can you please give more details?

First get off the cover over the speedometer simply lift up, after it remove the cover front of the display, then gently pull the speedometer out from its place,
then take off the 2 screws from lcd panel, then pull it off but start with the right side or it stucks in place. pull out cables.

Just simply checked the pins physically with my fingers, if one move then solder it.

You have to resolder lcd pins on pcb.

I coudn't manage to pull out the display.... it just stuck in on the left hand side...there should still have a clip to hold it..... I nearly break the display...>.< still can't get it out...

 

Cant get the display to come loose. What have I done wrong, its totally stuck. Don't know how hard I should pull it...

I had same problems. It´s stuck from up right clip (LHD), like in your photo. I finally got it by bending the display with plastic trim tool from right above and same time pulling from right below(where the screw goes) with hook etc. tool. You just need to pull the display from above and below same time. Small sharp pulls. Good luck!

I eventually take it out and fixed it....
when u pull the clock out... u need to pull it from both side at the same time... just put your finger under it and use a bit of power to pull it out...
take your time... dun rush... I nearly brake the front cover when it do it...

 

It has finally come loose.. More force then I thought was required. Used the idéa with a bend tool behind the display and that did the trick.

But I also chipped the display a bit. Just have to glue it..

Damn I have the same problem.... How much would honda charge to fix you reckon? Hours work?

 

Highly unlikely they'd be fixing this, they would tell you to replace the whole display.

 

If You ask them to do specific job, why not? I have same plan, let them pull out the display and if they have no soldering experience, I'll do it by myself and let them put back the display again.

 

You best do it your self and save money.

They will charge you just to remove it.

 

Sure they charge money, but if You destroy the display, it cost more.

 

i have this problem too , has anyone had Honda fix theirs ? if so how much are they charging ?

 

I have this problem with my Civic and I can tell you how much a dealer repair will be as Honda just quoted me for it at after a service. Wait for it: try £366.20 (I assume that's to replace the unit and not for a spot of soldering). That does include VAT though.

At that price, I think I can live with it.

Cheap fix for this problem

OK so it's temporary and you will have to do it on a regular basis but I have found that a firm slap on top of the dash just above the display restores all the digits to their former glory. Can sometimes last up to a couple of weeks and worst case (cold weather) it may need a daily thrash.

Either way, costs nothing, solves the problem and makes me feel a whole heap better!

I removed mine and just heated up and resoldered all the pins on the LCD. Problem solved. Cost nothing, only took some time and patience to remove the panels without damaging any clips.

Just a quick tip, today ~6 months after first fixing this I had to resolder as the pins were loose again - seems that the solder doesn't stick we'll to the pcb. The, hopefully, permanent solution is to hot glue the whole thing after soldering to ensure nothing ever gets disconnected again.

 

same as mine... I done it twice within 4 month... maybe recently the weather is too hot in AU...
I think is good idea to have a hot glue after re soldering.. but if it loosing again... is very hard to fix it then...

 

Same issue with mine, but only on the clock. Rest is fine. Trying to get it done under 3 month dealer warranty, as it's £275 +vat +labour to replace :/

Well my problem is the lack of flux, I should have used it, I knew I should have and still i didn't, was too lazy to get some.
The issue is recurring, and since hot glueing I had to take it apart again and fix two other pins - REALLY starts to piss me off, this time I hot glued the whole damn pin line. This is the single most annoying thing on my car and I feel like I'd be much happier if I just took it out and smashed it to bits with a hammer... arghhh

PS. Temperature differential doesn't help... clearly, since mine is failing in the summer AND in the winter

Oh and this time I lost the vertical line on the last digit in the middle line of the display... but that's it - I'm not taking this little f*** out ever again, not even if it starts displaying obscene messages

 

Luckily we have two electronic engineers at work and one of them fixed it. I am convinced the problem won't return.

Hi, not sure if anyone can help me with this but my problem is similar to this, apart from its not that some aren't coming on, its that all of the segments have come on about half way so it makes reading what the display says quite hard. Not sure if it will be a soldering problem as its not that any aren't working, but all working too well so I feel it may be an electrical fault. Maybe a blown resistor or something but think I may have to replace it to fix. Anyone got any tips or know how much they are and best place to get them?

Does anyone know if this clock issue could possibly be covered under warranty?? As it's a manufacturing fault x

 

I had a 3month warranty when i bought the car, so it was repaired under that (it covered electrical problems), but not sure if Honda would cover it themselves. Worth a try, as it's an expensive job to replace it (honda refused to resolder the points), but a garage could probably take it out and resolder it for a lot less.

 

My display is totally dead, going to try suggested soldering. I presume removing the speedo is specific to LHD as I don't see how it overlaps the clock on mine.
